Goodbye Chastity, Hello Chaz

Category: GLBTA
Posted on: July 15, 2009 4:34 PM, by Greg Laden

Do you remember Chasity Bono? The cute little daughter of Sonny and Cher, frequently brought out on stage by the duo at the end of their show to throw a kiss to the audience? No? Did you ever see the Sonny and Cher Show? No? Do you remember the 1960s at all? No? Too young? No?

... Oh... I see....

Well, let me refresh your memory, or at least, help you construct a new one:

Since then, a lot has happened. And most recently, Chaz (nee Chastity) Bono has pretty much completed a sex change operation and is now out and active.

A political and social activist, Chaz lives in West Hollywood .... Bono began the sex change process in early March shortly after his 40th birthday.

"I am excited for Chaz that he will now be able to live life the way he wants to and in a body that is more comfortable for him," Kristen Schaffer, the executive director of Outfest told RadarOnline.com in June. "Chaz's 'coming out' as transgender is wonderful for the LGBT community as it not only increases transgender visibility, but also shows that we should never compromise our own identity."

Do you remember the 1960s at all?

Depends on how you define "remember." Because in spite of being born in '76, there were times when I was still using a lot of acid, that I distinctly remember those times in the sixties when...

Seriously though, I am always excited to see trans people choosing to come "out" with it, rather than trying to hide it. I totally understand and respect why so many of them don't, but it is really great when they do - especially when they are famous or semi-famous...

Or would it be more accurate to say, famous, once removed???

"Or would it be more accurate to say, famous, once removed???"

That would be her father.

"once removed" ... that would be the other direction of the sex change operation.

Congrats Chaz (as though you'll read this). Best of luck! And avoid Fox News interviews.

Thanks for handling this with respect. I wish nothing but the best for him.

DuWayne: If you were born in 1976, it's very likely that all of the "acid" you used was actually a mixture of psychedelic amphetamines, not real LSD.

withheld: Actually, male-to-female gender reassignment surgery is more a matter of refashioning than removal; remember that the male naughty bits and the female naughty bits have the same embryonic origin. A post-op MTF has a vagina that spent some time as a penis.

No, it wasn't ebohlman. The vast majority I used was synthesized by a friend and while there is a lot of the rest that wasn't pure LSD, I know it wasn't amphetimines. About the closest was the time I took what I am pretty sure was PCP.

I am not your average idiotic drug user. While I did a great many stupid things in the course of my drug use, I did so with a great deal of awareness about what I was actually doing.
