Paul Colinvaux in "Fates of Nations" makes the case that the poor have more children than the wealthy because people have the number of children they think they can afford. Poor children come cheap and may even be economically positive, whereas well off children are very expensive.
I think there is a tendency for new immigrants to have more children than usual. Perhaps it is that they are relatively richer than at home, but do not yet realize how much their children are going to cost them.
