My friend, Sara, sent me two Yellow Ibis t-shirts so I could postpone, by a couple more days, that long and lonely trudge through ten foot high snowdrifts to the laundromat. Yellow Ibis is a small company that sells science-based products such as mugs, engravings, prints and t-shirts. The shirt that I am wearing today is light blue with Darwin's "I Think" Tree of Life on it. This tree is copied from the first one ever drawn by Darwin (pictured) in his notebook, Transmutation.
As I see it, this shirt is essential apparel for any practicing evolutionary biologist. I am anticipating that PZ will be sent two dozen of these by his flock of faithful readers in honor of his hatchday celebration.
Disclaimers: I do not get paid anything to say nice things about this, or anything else, on my blog. I did get two free shirts out of this deal, but in another (employed) life, I would happily buy these shirts, just so I could have Darwin's Tree of Life plastered across my chest (a shirt is cheaper than a tattoo).

GrrlScientist is an evolutionary biologist, ornithologist, aviculturist, birder and freelance science and nature writer. A native of the Pacific Northwest, she relocated from Seattle to NYC with her parrots after earning a BS in Microbiology (emphasis in Virology) and PhD in Zoology (Ornithology) from the University of Washington. In NYC, she was the Chapman Postdoctoral Fellow at the American Museum of Natural History for two years, pursuing part of her "dream" research project by reconstructing a molecular phylogeny of the parrots of the South Pacific islands. GrrlScientist and her five parrots are currently relocating to Germany, where she will continue writing her blog while also writing a book and learning German. (Meanwhile, her parrots will continue to nibble on her extensive personal library.) If you appreciate GrrlScientist's writing, you can help pay her living expenses by hiring her to "blog" your conference, speak at your club or write articles for your publication (or by clicking on the Paypal button below). These t-shirts are very cool. I might have to get the one with "hot like capcaicin" or the "as sweet as sugar". Perfect for a food chemist
Hmmm, Mum was asking what I wanted for my birthday.

But what a cool tattoo it would be!

Hey Grrlscientist!
Big thanks for mentioning us. I think 'company' might be a bit of an ambitious statement for a couple of rag-tag underemployed scientists. :) But we can draw a chemical structure on straight. ;)
All the best

Hey, YellowIbis folks! Love your stuff - I've got to get me the coffee cup with the Warhol treatment of Darwin. BTW, do you think you might sell a ton of the EDTA shirts to autism-chelation therapy activists???

Hi Abel PharmBoy,
Hmm... that connection hadn't occurred to us. I think we were thinking more along the lines of 'EDTA - wonder substance!' since it's in a lot of food, soaps, etc. Plus of course many people use it as part of their scientific work.
Best wishes
Sara
