GrrlScientist is an evolutionary biologist, ornithologist, aviculturist, birder and freelance science and nature writer. A native of the Pacific Northwest, she relocated from Seattle to NYC with her parrots after earning a BS in Microbiology (emphasis in Virology) and PhD in Zoology (Ornithology) from the University of Washington. In NYC, she was the Chapman Postdoctoral Fellow at the American Museum of Natural History for two years, pursuing part of her "dream" research project by reconstructing a molecular phylogeny of the parrots of the South Pacific islands. GrrlScientist and her five parrots are currently relocating to Germany, where she will continue writing her blog while also writing a book and learning German. (Meanwhile, her parrots will continue to nibble on her extensive personal library.) If you appreciate GrrlScientist's writing, you can help pay her living expenses by hiring her to "blog" your conference, speak at your club or write articles for your publication (or by clicking on the Paypal button below). If you read an essay on this blog that you especially enjoyed, please nominate it for inclusion in OpenLab2009.

Online interviews with GrrlScientist: Kolibri Expeditions, ScienceOnline09, Nature Blog Network and ScienceBlogs.

GrrlScientist's banner was designed by graphic artist, Jeff Hebert, whose other work can be viewed here.

Another Random and Weird Blog Meme

tags: , ,

One of the very first people who ever read or linked to my blog, Tabor, tagged me to participate in a blog meme. Since I am a veteran blog whore who always is looking to increase my traffic, I will play, although grudgingly, because I hate letting you all know how boring I truly am.

The Rules are as follows:

  1. Link to the person that tagged you and post the rules on your blog.

  2. Share 7 random and or weird things about yourself.

  3. Tag 7 random people at the end of your post and include links to their blogs.

  4. Let each person know that they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

Seven Random or Weird Things About Me:

  1. My favorite vegetables are asparagus and spinach, but I never ate either one of them until I was an adult

  2. Even though I hate beer, I drink it when I go to pubs because it is relatively affordable for me and I know I won't drink too much of it

  3. I bake the best cookies in the world, but since I cannot afford the gas for my stove these days, I rely solely on my microwave to cook food -- none of which are cookies (boohoo)

  4. I have been in love many times in my life, but no one has ever been in love with me

  5. I love wearing sweaters, although NYC rarely has good sweater-wearing weather (cool, but not windy or rainy)

  6. I love both real vanilla ice cream and dark chocolate, but rarely eat either one

  7. I have never owned a TV, although I enjoy watching it

Seven Random Bloggers whom I read;

  1. Bob at deep thoughts and silliness

  2. Young Female Scientist

  3. Phila at Bouphonia

  4. Robin and Roger at The New Dharma Bums

  5. The Ridger at The Greenbelt

  6. Brownie at The Library Diva

  7. Kristjan Wager at Pro-Science

Two words: hard cider.

Try the free category on Craig's list if you want a teevee.

And a solar oven, I'm told, will bake cookies superbly. There are make your own instructions on the web.

And finally, I'm reading Madeleine L'Engle's A Circle of Quiet - Greeks had four names for love - agape is one worth checking. You're loved, grrl - at least by this reader and student of yours!

The vegetables I really didn't like as a child (Broccoli, Green Beans, Cauliflower) I can eat now though I only like Broccoli of those three.

As for the loved bit, as Annie wrote, it really depends on what type of love.

Aaagh! I've been tagged!!!

It might take me a couple of days to respond - my laptop's hard drive died last week, so I can't blog at home (not that it's easy anyway, what with The Beast).
