GrrlScientist is an evolutionary biologist, ornithologist, aviculturist, birder and freelance science and nature writer. A native of the Pacific Northwest, she relocated from Seattle to NYC with her parrots after earning a BS in Microbiology (emphasis in Virology) and PhD in Zoology (Ornithology) from the University of Washington. In NYC, she was the Chapman Postdoctoral Fellow at the American Museum of Natural History for two years, pursuing part of her "dream" research project by reconstructing a molecular phylogeny of the parrots of the South Pacific islands. GrrlScientist and her five parrots are currently relocating to Germany, where she will continue writing her blog while also writing a book and learning German. (Meanwhile, her parrots will continue to nibble on her extensive personal library.) Now that is just too cute. A nice display of operant conditioning and some smart design to give a pooch a fun time when he/she is alone.

That is funny. They really need to do that outside, where the dog can get a good chase.

My dogs would run to the ball and wait for ME to go get it with them. I'd throw it and they'd run to it, wait for me, and then sit while I throw it, run to the ball, wait for me, etc. until I fall down I am so tired. They'd go all day long.
Another version is dog foot ball. I throw the pigskin to hubby, the dogs run to him and wait until he catches it. Then he throws it to me, the dogs run to me to see if I CAN catch it (he throws harder than I do). Only one dog has a large enough mouth to pick up said football, but he never does. None of them like the soccer ball and the big dog runs away if he sees anyone kick it.
The main problem with letting the dog use that alone is they often have to go to the bathroom after they have played so hard. I would not let my dogs have anything mechanical if they were by themselves. Hard chew toys like Nylabones are cool, but they can wait for me to get home to play more energetic games.
