GrrlScientist is an evolutionary biologist, ornithologist, aviculturist, birder and freelance science and nature writer. A native of the Pacific Northwest, she relocated from Seattle to NYC with her parrots after earning a BS in Microbiology (emphasis in Virology) and PhD in Zoology (Ornithology) from the University of Washington. Looking east along West 21st in Manhattan on a foggy evening (2 May 2008).
Last week, I went to Seed Media Group's offices in Midtown Manhattan to hang out with two of my colleagues at ScienceBlogs, Jake (who lives in NYC) and Razib (who was visiting), as well as to talk with the Seed people and to drink some free beer. They buy great beer, not that undrinkable michelob light crap, by the way. When I left that evening, I was delighted to see that the city had become foggy and cool, but wasn't raining, as had been predicted. Of course, being a Seattle girl, I had to take some pictures of this lovely sight so I could share it with all of you.
As I walked to the westside subways, I stopped to photograph this lovely building;

Looking north along the sidewalk, I was impressed with this view of the clouds lying low over Manhattan;

I walked north along the Avenue of the Americas (6th Avenue), I noticed that a golden steeple towered above the other buildings. I suppose this steeple is attached to a church, but I don't know this for sure because I didn't stop to investigate This steeple is attached to the Met Life building, located on 23rd and Madison, which was the world's tallest building from 1909 until 1913 (thanks to Joe for this information!). I snapped another picture a few moments before this one, where the golden tower is partially concealed by the low-lying clouds.

This picture was snapped from the crosswalk. Even though I had the walk signal, the cabbies were rude bastards who tried to run me over anyway, probably because I was stationary.

After this, I made haste to the subway to return home to my humble abode. Jake and Razib went out to a movie followed by a round of competitive drinking.

When Jake and Razib get older they'll realise that competitive drinking is not a good idea, and have to take up competitive movie watching instead.

I know that I can't swill the booze as I could at 20-30, old age weakens the bladder I suspect.

I forgot to point out that the worst thing about competitive movie watching is the bragging afterwards. Thus far the winner is the guy who said "I've been to see Brief Encounter three times. Without my girlfriend".
