GrrlScientist is an evolutionary biologist, ornithologist, aviculturist, birder and freelance science and nature writer. A native of the Pacific Northwest, she relocated from Seattle to NYC with her parrots after earning a BS in Microbiology (emphasis in Virology) and PhD in Zoology (Ornithology) from the University of Washington. In NYC, she was the Chapman Postdoctoral Fellow at the American Museum of Natural History for two years, pursuing part of her "dream" research project by reconstructing a molecular phylogeny of the parrots of the South Pacific islands. GrrlScientist and her five parrots are currently relocating to Germany, where she will continue writing her blog while also writing a book and learning German. This is another of the American Museum of Natural History's horse artworks. This piece is located at the 81st and Columbus street entrance to the museum grounds.
This horse's colors and patterning was no doubt inspired by Vincent van Gogh's masterpiece, The Starry Night (Dutch: De sterrennacht), which is one of my favorite paintings. The original painting can be viewed at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) located in NYC.
Unlike Nocturnal Landscape, which is painted, Starry Night is a tile artwork. Unfortunately, even though all the horses have been suffering the unwanted attentions of vandals, this horse has been especially targeted, as you can see from the missing tilework.
Fortunately, the vandals' damages have not progressed to the point where you can see it in this detail.
