Respectful Insolence

"A statement of fact cannot be insolent." The miscellaneous ramblings of a surgeon/scientist on medicine, quackery, science, pseudoscience, history, and pseudohistory (and anything else that interests him)

Who (or what) is Orac?

orac.jpg Orac is the nom de blog of a (not so) humble pseudonymous surgeon/scientist with an ego just big enough to delude himself that someone, somewhere might actually give a rodent's posterior about his miscellaneous verbal meanderings, but just barely small enough to admit to himself that few will. (Continued here, along with a DISCLAIMER that you should read before reading any medical discussions here.)

Orac's old Blog is archived at Archived Insolence.

William Donohue: An embarrassment to Catholics everywhere

Category: PoliticsReligion
Posted on: February 8, 2007 2:31 PM, by Orac

Here's more evidence.

Yeah, I know it's old, but Donohue's popping up again, and I had forgotten what a nutjob he can be.

End of rare political rant. You may return to your regularly scheduled medical and science blogging.

ADDENDUM:

More examples have shown up in my in-box of the "wit" and lack of wisdom of William Donohue:

On using Martin Luther King as an example (on YouTube here).

On sexual abuse by priests: ""[M]ost 15-year-old teenage boys wouldn't allow themselves to be molested. So why did you?"

It might not have been the smartest of moves to follow up the sentence: "They like anal sex" with "I like children"

As a Massachusetts resident, I am deeply offended when right wingers appropriate Bay State symbols of the American Revolution for their own ends (Michael Savage's Paul Revere society, the Minutemen in the border states). If I was still Catholic, I'd feel much the same thing about this asshole.

I think him and people like him are on the rise though, and so many people in the center and on the left are cowed by these right-wing loonies that I don't see much hope for a substantive backlash. The righties' marketing schemes are just too good.

Sounds like Bill "Loofa" O'Reilly when he was talking about how there had to be some element of "Fun" for Shawn Hornbeck.

Those two fit well together.

As a Catholic, I have to agree. I mean, this douche basically just decided to call his group "the Catholic League", it's not like he's appointed by the Pope or anything. I think a more fitting name would be "the Right Wing Culture Warrior" league. Or just "Douchebags 'R Us".

Here's a woo angle to Bill "I'm crazy as batguano' Donahue this column can explore. The Catholic League has blog ads stating "Want To Know a Dirty Little Secret?
CONDOMS DON'T SAVE LIVES a public service message by the Catholic League". Now all reputable research shows the exact opposite. It's time to stop pampering this dangerous lunatic and call him what he is, a bigoted, racist, purveyor of lies.

There's something also in naming your "Catholic anti-defamation" group after the people responsible for the St Bartholemew's Day massacre, which I'm sure the Church would prefer people forgot about.

He made a very low-key appearance on The Colbert Report about a year ago. Stephen Colbert just gave him a lot of rope.
