Respectful Insolence

"A statement of fact cannot be insolent." The miscellaneous ramblings of a surgeon/scientist on medicine, quackery, science, pseudoscience, history, and pseudohistory (and anything else that interests him)

Who (or what) is Orac?

orac.jpg Orac is the nom de blog of a (not so) humble pseudonymous surgeon/scientist with an ego just big enough to delude himself that someone, somewhere might actually give a rodent's posterior about his miscellaneous verbal meanderings, but just barely small enough to admit to himself that few will. (Continued here, along with a DISCLAIMER that you should read before reading any medical discussions here.)

Orac's old Blog is archived at Archived Insolence.

I don't know if this would work, but it would sure be funny

Car alarms probably annoy you. Certainly, they annoy me. I understand the reason for their existence, but some of them seem to be so finicky that just a truck driving by will set them off. Fortunately (or, unfortunately, depending on your point of view), there's the Orgasmalarm

If you're at work, you're definitely going to want to turn the sound down low for this one:

I don't know if this would work any better than a standard car alarm or get people's attention any more, but it'd sure be funny. Well, maybe the first couple of times. After that, I'm sure it would be just as annoying as any other car alarm.

Given how often they go off by mistake I think car alarms probably have lost a great deal of any effectiveness they might have had. Even when they come on late at night the initial reaction is likely to be that its another false alarm.

When one goes on for a half hour or longer and nobody responds to it, it's pretty obvious that it has lost its effectiveness. I always want to pitch a brick through the windshield to give it something to wail about. (I don't, but I have been known to leave the owners nasty notes.)

Nope, seems very effective to me.

Oh, I see what you mean.

Well effective or not at least it would sound better and be a lot funnier than our present crop.

I'm for a law allowing us to spray paint a car sounding an alarm that isn't answered.

I saw this on Gizmodo, at work of course. I work in an IT shop so I called everyone over. We all had a good laugh, both the guys and the girls. So it might not be NSFW depending on who you work with.

Earlier today (okay, it was still Saturday 5 minutes ago!) I followed my younger son's marching band on a parade. They managed to set off at least three car alarms. It was very amusing to hear them go off in counterpoint to the drum line!

Considering that the band consists of 14 to 18 year old pretty good* kids: it would have been more amusing with THAT alarm!

(you need a good head on your shoulders to march, play in tune and wear a wool uniform in June with no reward but applause from strangers on the side of the road!)

LOL and a half. That tops my idea, which was just to mount the sirens under the seats so that the crook couldn't actually drive away cause he couldn't stay in the car ;)

Course, you'd get sued for hurting his hearing if you did that...

If people find out your car alarm sounds like that....they start kicking it for fun and inviting their maets round to "rock your car".

We saw the Thunderbirds at McDill AFB some years back. At one point, one of the F-16s made a 450kt pass right over the parking area, and EVERY car alarm in the place went off. It was hilarious.

There are some birds in city areas which have begun emulating the noises of car alarms.

This product could really add a twist to the birds and bees speech.

How come no one's cashed in on the advertising potential of car alarms? When the car gets broken into (or just wobbled slightly), it broadcasts a prerecorded message:

"Ozzie's Indian Takeaway! For the best in asian cuisine at low prices! Just ten minutes from this break-in!"

or

"Visit scienceBlogs dot com, for up-to-date information of the latest scientific advances and discussion of the latest creationist bullshit. Your one-stop-shop for all your science needs."

Just wait til it's possible to program car alarms over the wireless Internet.

Then they'll be playing spam!
