Respectful Insolence

"A statement of fact cannot be insolent." The miscellaneous ramblings of a surgeon/scientist on medicine, quackery, science, pseudoscience, history, and pseudohistory (and anything else that interests him)

Who (or what) is Orac?

orac.jpg Orac is the nom de blog of a (not so) humble pseudonymous surgeon/scientist with an ego just big enough to delude himself that someone, somewhere might actually give a rodent's posterior about his miscellaneous verbal meanderings, but just barely small enough to admit to himself that few will. (Continued here, along with a DISCLAIMER that you should read before reading any medical discussions here.)

Orac's old Blog is archived at Archived Insolence.

LOL--what?

Category: Alternative medicineHumorMedicineQuackery

PZ seems to think that the whole "LOL" thing has gone too far. He may be right. In fact, I've even commented on it before.

Even though I have a bit of trouble wrapping my mind around the whole "LOLCats" phenomenon and its various bizarre spinoffs, I do have to admit that I've found one LOL spinoff that's pretty darned amusing.

Are you ready for LOLQuacks?

Some examples:

OK, I know the above has nothing to do with quackery, but as a fan of the Fantastic Four and a connoisseur of pareidolia, I couldn't resist. On with a few homeopathy-related examples:

This one is amusing because I stood in the very place where the subject of this photo is standing:

Even the originator of the woo that it homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann himself, is not immune to the LOL treatment:

Heh.

I'm honoured! I've been reading and enjoying your blog for ages, but it's the writings of the likes of yourself, Ben Goldacre, PZ, the little black duck, David Colquhoun et al that convinced me I just wasn't worthy to write my own Bad Science / Sceptical blog. You guys just do too good a job...

Then, over the weekend, someone reminded me of the LOLnoun phenomenon and I realised that I suddenly had a purpose, albeit a somewhat childish one ;) On Monday, LOLquacks were hatched into the universe.

Now you've been so very kind as to mention the site here, I'm hoping that some of your regulars might submit a few things as a result...

There's no particular reason, despite the name, why anyone should limit themselves strictly to quackery. All forms of magical thinking, woo-woo and charlatanry-for-profit are fair game so bring 'em on!

Thanks again, Orac :)

to combine the LOLCats with Superman and scifi/fantasy fiction, you should look at this cartoon:
