Respectful Insolence

"A statement of fact cannot be insolent." The miscellaneous ramblings of a surgeon/scientist on medicine,
quackery, science, pseudoscience, history, and pseudohistory (and anything else that interests him)

Who (or what) is Orac?

orac.jpg Orac is the nom de blog of a (not so) humble pseudonymous surgeon/scientist with an ego just big enough to delude himself that someone, somewhere might actually give a rodent's posterior about his miscellaneous verbal meanderings, but just barely small enough to admit to himself that few will. (Continued here, along with a DISCLAIMER that you should read before reading any medical discussions here.)

...to ask über-quack Hulda Clark, the woman who disagrees with Dr. Simoncini in that she thinks that all cancer is caused by an intestinal fluke and that she can cure it by "zapping" it with a chintzy device she calls a "Zapper" that looks a lot like a Scientology E-meter, any question you want. She's going to be broadcasting her quackery all over the intertubes tonight on Patrick Timpone's One Radio Network at 7 PM CDT:

Thursday, August 7, 7-8 PM Talk to the Legendary Dr. Hulda Clark

Dr. Clark has a clinic in Mexico and claims a high success rate with Cancer patients and uses the word "Cure" openly widely in her work and many books. Her latest is "The Cure and prevention of all Cancers." We'll talk about zappers, parasites, cleansing, diet and what are the causes and cures she claims her experience and research are clearly showing. Please tell everyone you care about and also forward this, of course, to anyone you know who is dealing with cancer.

Consider it done, Mr. Timpone. I've just forwarded it to all my readers. It would be interesting to see if any skeptical questions could make it through at 888.663.6386. I'm sure she'd be happy to explain the scientific evidence backing up her claim that all cancer is caused by an intestinal fluke and why that evidence is nowhere to be found in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.

Any one thinking of heading down to Mexico for a zapper cure ought head over to www.ratbags.com an view some pictures of the place. Please be sure to note the classy funeral director's car parked across the street. Something about a Chevette with its hood chained to the front bumper lets you know that you have arrived in the classy part of town. If you arrive after dark, you might be instantly "cured"of your cancer right out in the street. Either way your wallet will be gone.

I have always wondered why that funeral director's car was parked there. I asked PB, and he told me that there were no funeral parlors in the area. I guess he was there to pick up some business. Clarke's victims are pretty broke after some of her treatments.

You've got to be kidding me. At least she doesn't think cancer is a fungus, which I think is stupider (or does she?).

I wonder how she explains the number of cancer patients in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Dagor - Flukes clearly thrive in radioactive environments.

I have actually met Clarke, quite by accident. When I was in college, a friend asked me to participate in a video production.

It wasn't until I was operating a camera that Clarke entered to deliver her spiel. At the end of her presentation, I walked backstage to confront my friend. He, and everyone else in the control booth, were laughing. They thanked me for holding the camera steady throughout the whole ordeal. They picked me to operate the floor camera because they thought I was the only one who could keep a straight face.

There is no point in asking her questions. She is clearly delusional. I am not trying to be cruel or sarcastic; she seemed literally mentally ill.

This woman is pure poison. You may as well hire a witch-doctor to wave ju-ju beads over you.

What, exactly, is she a "Doctor" of, and where did she earn her degree?

Posted by: wfjag | August 7, 2008 10:13 PM

Matthew - sounds like she fits the definition of a "quackaloon" - a quack who believes their dangerous and profitable woo wholeheartedly.
