Respectful Insolence

"A statement of fact cannot be insolent." The miscellaneous ramblings of a surgeon/scientist on medicine, quackery, science, pseudoscience, history, and pseudohistory (and anything else that interests him)

Who (or what) is Orac?

orac.jpg Orac is the nom de blog of a (not so) humble pseudonymous surgeon/scientist with an ego just big enough to delude himself that someone, somewhere might actually give a rodent's posterior about his miscellaneous verbal meanderings, but just barely small enough to admit to himself that few will. (Continued here, along with a DISCLAIMER that you should read before reading any medical discussions here.)

Orac's old Blog is archived at Archived Insolence.

I'd say this is definitely a contender:

ADDENDUM: Sorry, I just assumed everyone knew what these guys are. If you don't, here are a couple of classic Sesame Street videos to demonstrate the Yip Yip Aliens in action:

Hank, I believe it's an American pop culture reference from the Sesame Street program on their "tele-vision" devices.

Yes, here we are; the yip-yip martians. If ever we do encounter aliens, this is pretty much how it will go.

More proof conventional medicine practitioners are a bunch of criminals who are about money and not health.

"Amgen sued by California and 14 other states over anemia drug
The suit alleges that the Thousand Oaks biotech firm offered medical providers kickbacks to boost sales of Aranesp, leading to fraudulent claims for reimbursement from Medicaid and other insurers."

Talk your way out of that one Orac. The medicine you champion is involved in fraud and kickback.

How can you continue to badmouth Alternative Medicine when there is undeniable proof every other week or so that your medicine is full of selfish greedy criminals whose only interest is money?

Every other week Orac. There is a criminal or fraud story involving medical research, medical practice, or drug firms about every other week.

How many people did the medicine you champion kill with Vioxx Orac? Or do you bother to keep count?

This, dear Orac, made me weep with nostalgic joy. There is nothing like dragging your sorry sleep-deprived teenaged ass home from school, making a glass of chocolate milk with Nestle's Quik (powdered, of course)and settling in to what would be the most intellectually stimulating part of your day: "Sesame Street." Ma na ma na.

Thanks for that. Just the thing I needed to perk me up a bit.

The Yip-Yip aliens were my favorite part of Sesame Street. To this day, I cannot look at a bowl of oatmeal without doing an imitation of the aliens.

+1 brazillion Intarweb pointz to the person who digs up a YouTube clip of the Yip Yips encounter with oatmeal.

sez Kate Biliblahblah:

"How can you continue to badmouth Alternative Medicine when there is undeniable proof every other week or so that your medicine is full of selfish greedy criminals whose only interest is money?"

Even if there are some selfish greedy slimebags in the machine, we still have trial results that show that the drugs in use right now are mostly safe and effective. If new research shows that previous results were wrong, we stop using the drugs.

But at the end of any day where we have to discontinue use of a drug amid thousands of other effective therapies, your alternative therapies will still be as ineffective as they have always been.

Just because we have a few rotten apples (who will be rooted out and brought into the harsh light of day), doesn't make you right, nor does it make your therpaies effective or safe to use.

OMG! I loved Sesame Street when I was a wee lass. My favorite character was Cookie Monster, but the Yip Yip Aliens had to be a close second.

My, how times have changed. I used to go crazy whan Cookie Monster sang "C is For Cookie"; nowadays, he sings about how cookies are a "sometimes food".

Thanks, Orac, for bringing back some very fond chilhood memories!
