Got some news, folks: I'm going to be on NPR's Science Friday with Ira Flatow, this Friday, from 3:15 to 4:00 ET, debating Tom Bethell about the politics of science. Meanwhile, in advance of the paperback release, we've set up a lot of new book tour dates in September. I'm going back to the West Coast (San Diego, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle), but also to a number of places where I've never given talks before (Madison, Tempe, Albuquerque, Santa Fe). It's surprisingly difficult to debate goons like Bethel. They've usually managed to condense their idiocy into soundbites, and trying to logically refute the soundbites takes too much time. Get five really stupid things Bethel said in his book (choosing may be hard) and hammer on them, saying their just typical of the anti science mentality of the current Republican party.
But you knew that :-)

NPR has become completely obsessed with "balance", even on science issues.
In recent years, it has come to trump everything else -- particularly reality.
It's "Dueling think tanks" taken to the extreme.
It's entertaining sometimes, but not very useful from the standpoint of getting real information.

In the meantime, though, why can't you manage some talk time here in Sonoma County, CA? It's true that our bookstores are hopelessly lame but there's a real University here, and Phil Plait works for it (and also Peter Philips of "Censored!" fame;) and I suspect you could get a sizeable audience at Sonoma State if your scheduler could find a way to arrange it. This was the second stop on Greg Palast's book tour last week and he filled the hall.

If you came to Sonoma County, that would be great! I'm from there, and currently live nearby in Davis. I'd love to interview you on my radio show. It's the other science show in town. (You were interviewed on TWIS last year) Plus I couldn't make it to Yearly KOS and I've got a book by some looney named Mooney that needs a scribble!

Apart from Sonoma State, Copperfield's Books in Petaluma, a town with an active liberal base (a "Progressive Festival" with leftist speakers and organizations is held there every year,) might be your best venue. The Copperfield's stores in Sebastopol or Santa Rosa are also possibilities, but their author evenings tend to feature newage mush.

Chris, I'm working on a gig for you in the scientifically-dense Triangle where I'm sure you will be widely-heralded. I'll let you and Tim Brazier know the contacts via e-mail. You guys should also try to get to Denver's Tattered Cover before Ewen Callaway of Complex Medium leaves for grad school. Ewen is a producer for Here on Earth at KGNU in Boulder and just had a great interview with Michael Pollan.
