Russia Pretends To Claim The Arctic: They should've known better...

Category: Sexed Up Science

...or at least picked a B rate movie...

In an apparent attempt to "sex up" a news program, the TV station has been caught passing off footage from the 1997 Hollywood blockbuster Titanic as a real-life report on the Kremlin's recent attempt to stake its claim to the riches of the Arctic Ocean.

While I'm all for appealing to the general public, there's a stark contrast between sexing up science and ripping off the highest grossing film of all time. Someone had to notice and in this case it was Finnish 13 year old Waltteri Seretin:

I have heard that they don't always tell the truth in Russia but I didn't think they could have screwed it up that badly.

Of course, we still think they really put a titanium flag down there. Maybe.

I think I can see the flag, right there on the top of the...giant ship? Is that, in fact, where the titanic went down? I heard it was cold water, but come on, who would take a cruise to the arctic?

Stay Classy, Russia.

See my post here talking about how the geology of the Arctic is all related with Russia's recent submarine territoriality.

Looks like they are claiming (officially to the UN) that since a piece of crust used to be part of the Siberian shelf (but rifted away >30 million years ago) should be theirs, which would extend their sea floor rights significantly.

It's a fascinating 'intersection' of plate tectonics, earth resources, and geopolitics.

A local media critic show in Australia points out that the Russians themselves added the Titanic footage, and Reuters merely passed it on to the outlets. Reuters apologised when this was outed.

im actualy afraid of ships and any other form or water transport,
but i have copies of the newspapers printed in 1912 of the voyjer and the sinking of the titanic im very inspired by the people who are still looking at the titanic
i think its a shame that you cant actualy get it out of the ocean.
the film brought out in 2005 gave me a great insite to the happernings that brought the titanic to founder
i olny wish i could to speak to some one who actualy survived the sinking and can remember the events :)
