If they had appeared with underpands on the outside and cloaks made out of bath towels, it would havebeen even better - Im would have paid to see that and it would have made a nice big splash in the news. :)

Honestly, though, I'll reserve judgment until I see what sorts of policies come from the administration. I remain hopefully optimistic (or optimistically hopeful).

I understand Obama may be keeping Gates to shore up his support from the military brass, but I think it sends the wrong message if you are truly trying to cut ties with failed policies of the past.
Then again, campaign promises notwithstanding, perhaps that is not what Obama is really about.
If Obama were really about change (and a change of course in Iraq), he would have appointed someone like General William Odum or perhaps General Wesley Clark.
I hate to be the one who spoils the post election party, but based on Obama's picks for Sec Def and Sec of State, I have my doubts about how serious he is about implementing real (as opposed to cosmetic) change.

Anyone who thinks Robert Gates is the best pick that Obama could have made should bear in mind that Obama could have picked anyone in America and that there is a long list of distinguished individuals (many of them former military brass and others like CIA veteran Ray McGovern ) who called it right on the Iraq invasion.
Perhaps it is time that we had someone as Secretary of Defense who actually understands that "war is hell".
We always seem to end up with the know-nothing ideologues (Rumsfeld, Cheney, MacNamara, etc) who either have no clue or could not give a s..t. how many people die because of their policies.
