The Egyptian goddess Isis was celebrated as the ideal wife and mother. The blogger known as Dr. Isis has some fancy-sounding degrees and is a physiologist at a major research university working on some terribly impressive stuff. She blogs about balancing her research career with the demands of raising small children, how to succeed as a woman in academia, and anything else she finds interesting. Also, she blogs about shoes. In fact, she blogs a lot about shoes.

...And behold, he raised the motherfucking Jameson on high as Isis bedecked her feet in glory, and the masses were sated. -- The Holy Gospel According to PhysioProf

Dr. Isis Goes and Gets Herself Famous...

Posted on: November 7, 2008 12:35 AM, by Isis the Scientist

On Monday Dr. Isis, the domestic and laboratory goddess, was sitting around in her office, minding her own business and posting to her humble little blogspot blog, when she received an email from the kind folks at ScienceBlogs asking her to join them. Her response was, "Shut Up!!!!." Then she checked to be sure that PhysioProf wasn't just screwing with her.

Video 1: A young artist's rendition of Dr. Isis's reaction to being asked to join ScienceBlogs.

Dr. Isis has been a longtime stalker fan of ScienceBlogs and the decision for her to join the team of top-notch bloggers writing here was an easy one. Seriously, Dr. Isis is still a little star-struck at having her blog housed together with blogs written by folks like Zuska, Bioephemera, Scicurious and PalMD. And Dr. Isis seriously peed a little when she received "welcome to the neighborhood" emails from DrugMonkey, Abel Pharmboy, and Bora (we should be clear that, although she's totally hot, the domestic and laboratory goddess gets excited really easily). She loves those guys!

So, now you know how much Dr. Isis loves Science Blogs and how thrilled she is to be here. The question, however, is "Why should I love Dr. Isis?" Allow me to illustrate with a picture of all the reasons you're going to want to check back here an awful lot:

Introductory%20Picture.jpg
Figure 1: Reasons why Dr. Isis is totally, amazingly hot

A - Those are Dr. Isis feet wearing Naughty Monkey shoes. Dr. Isis loves shoes. And clothes. And make-up. Dr. Isis posts a new shoe every week, but is also a strong believer that a woman need not compromise her femininity in order to succeed in academia. If you want a hot pair of heels and a candid discussion of the challenges women face in academia, you come visit Dr. Isis. And, if you want to email Dr. Isis a question, she'll answer it here.

Dr. Isis's feet are propped up on her dining room table. Dr. Isis's table is an important part of her day. She gathers here with her husband and young children daily and fiercely guards her family time. She is constantly trying to find ways to maximize the quality of the time she spends with them, and meal time is an important component of that. As a result, you'll get a lot of recipes.

B - Dr. Isis is a card-carrying physiologist/mommy/blogger and these are some of her favorite books:

  1. The American College of Sports Medicine's Advanced Exercise Physiology
  2. Boron and Boulpaep's Medical Physiology
  3. Lilly's Pathophysiology of Heart Disease
  4. Blogging for Dummies
  5. John West's Pulmonary Pathophysiology
  6. Laurel Gaylord's I Love My Mommy Because...

C - That's a glass of wine and Dr. Isis's Clinique lipstick in Pink Goddess. Sometimes at the end of the day, Mama needs a glass of wine. Unfortunately, Mama sometimes then gets an urge to blog.

D - Some bottles of assorteed cleaning supplies. Dr. Isis hates to clean and knows you probably do to. She'll occasionally throw you a bone to help you do it more easily.

E - That's one of Little Isis's toys. Dr. Isis has a brood under the age of two. They make her crazy, but occasionally Dr. Isis can get Little Isis to say some science words. You'll probably hear a lot about their antics.

F -That's Dr. Isis's pile of dirty laundry with one of her sexy little nightgowns on top. One of the biggest challeges Dr. Isis faces is how to maintain her focus on her marriage while also managing to teach, do research, write grants, raise some kids, and still look amazingly hot.

G - That's a stuffed monkey offered in homage to the men who encouraged her to begin blogging back in July and drove the first traffic to her original blog.

Dr. Isis may be completely self-absorbed, but she knows from whence she came and she is honored to be here. I look forward to the discussions we'll share in the future.

The SciBorg assimilates another victim. As the great philosopher Bruce Willis once said, “Welcome to the party, pal!”

This is gonna get interesting...

She gathers here with her husband and young children daily and fiercely guards her family time.

Definitely not my best quality. We almost never get to sit for dinner, and increasing the Q-time with kiddo means she's the most famous 4 year old in the busiest hospital in the country. She loves to round...must be an internist at heart.

Huzzah and congrats, Dr. Isis!

Well, nice to see the new digs. Quite a lot of style as expected.

Also nice to see myself listed in the harem. Sure beats "Eunuchs waving ostrich feathers to cool the totally hot goddess off a few tenths of a degree"

So, I got that going for me.

Congrats Dr. Isis! Love your new digs (and those shoes - not that I could pull them off myself but on you - totally hot!). You just made my whole day adding me to your "women Dr. Isis adores" blogroll. I am inspired to come up with some really kick-ass posts now to make myself worthy. Cheers!

I had to pass a link to those shoes on to my girlfriend :P

Damn. My voice is already drowned out..!!

Good thing it is Friday. My wife will not notice the extra beers consumed to console myself.

...tom...

P.S. You will be a smash here I am sure.

Welcome to Science Blogs. I'm very glad you're here, since I was almost never able to comment on the old blog -- that "Open ID" thingy almost never works at any Blogger blogs.

Since you are now here, and since Comrade Physio Prof has already conceded your overall victory in The Recipe War, and since the final "battle" is over chocolate desserts, which almost everyone loves, how about opening up the last round to entries from others here at ScienceBlogs? (And maybe consider next year having a pan-ScienceBlogs Recipe War; there are quite a few other foodies here.)

Congretulations, Isis.

Should someone invite Sarah Palin to read your blog? If not for its scientific content then at least for the shoes!

All the best.

Welcome, welcome, welcome! So glad to have you join the borg! And I'm honored to be one of the women Dr. Isis Adores - thank you. Love the shoes. And I admire your ability to manage work, family, shoes, AND produce an awesome blog! Once again, welcome!

Yay!!!!!!!

There have not been ANYWHERE near enough hot shoes around here. You have to fix that, girlfriend.

Whats up with the feed not working in reader? is it a science blogs issue or a reader issue? what will I do without instant updates of this new blog???

Posted by: ScientistMother | November 7, 2008 6:53 PM

I can't believe you actually own those shoes. Next time I see you, I'll have to hand over a few bucks. ;-)

We will all have to check back to the new space incessantly until the ScienceBlogs folks hook us up with our RSS feed to to the goddess.

"Dr Isis's Harem"! LOL!

Again, CONGRATULATIONS! No one deserves it more than you. (Even PhysioProf . . . heh heh heh . . .)

Will check back when there's more to read. Not terribly interested in the shoes, but perhaps the obvious way to tie Egyptian mythology to footwear is via the theory that Egypt's well-known symbol of life, the ankh, represents a schematic aerial view of a sandal. Sandals - so it would seem - are life.

Meanwhile, for a bit of retro why not spend the day playing my favourite eighties-era computer game?

Welcome Doc!

I think I'll stay with my Tivas though. I'm more a fan of shoes that are comfortable.
