A number of the Science Bloggers are away at the Society for Neuroscience meeting this week. This has substantially narrowed the opportunity for Dr. Isis to engage in a good ole blog scrap with one of her Sciblings over something wacky. She's on the verge of randomly picking a fight with one of the Sciblings left holding down the house (you had better start sleeping with one eye open, Abel Pharmboy). Still, Dr. Isis is happy that her Sciblings have not forgotten her in their drunken discussions of glia and hippocampi (hippocampuses?) and gabba receptors. Earlier today one of them sent her this:
Figure 1: Random pair of hot shoes spotted at the Society for Neuroscience meeting in Washington DC by a Science Blogger. Sent from their possibly iPhone.
Proof positive that Dr. Isis is not the only hot science broad who loves a pair of delicious shoes. Do you see the size of the heel on those things? My heart seriously skipped a beat. And do you see that they are kicked up on the freakin' table? Delicious!
For the record, Dr. Isis is not attending the Society for Neuroscience meeting. She has always considered herself more an an Experimental Biology or American College of Sports Medicine kind of gal. Plus, this week is the annual Lip Balm Conference and Dr. Isis has been slated to give a presentation there for months. Still, if she keeps seeing pictures of hot shoes like the ones at the Society for Neuroscience meeting, Dr. Isis might stop regarding the central nervous system (CNS) as nothing more than a giant confounder and start attending.

on the bar my friend, the bar....

Has hell frozen over!?!?! I agree that those are some pretty hot shoes...but I am surprised that the square toes slipped past Isis' radar (I myself don't mind square toes but the Goddess has made her opinions on this matter quite clear).

See, you know me too well, AA. Dr. Isis does not normally approve of a square-toed shoe. But, here is what won me over in terms of this scientist's hotness:
1) She's wearing purple velvet heels at a major scientific meeting
2) Did you see the size of the heel?
3) Those shoes are unabashedly kicked up on the bar.
All three of those things make me able to look past the square toe. The confidence to sport a wild pair of shoes at a conference is always hotter than the square toe.

Or maybe they're suede? Doesn't matter. Hotter than a square toe.
Mama needs a drink to cool off.

I concur. The confidence totally makes them hot. Well done, whoever you are with the purple shoes!

I concur that those are a beautiful pair of shoes, and like AA was totally SHOCKED to read that you thought they were hot. So shocked that I actually posted this comment while watching the Sarah Connor chronicles, which I never do.

That was the first thing I thought of too when I saw the pic - "Square toes? But Dr. Isis does not approve of square toes!"
Love the color though. They totally woulda gone with the outfit I wore today for work.

my frustration over missing sfn this year grows daily. grr!
btw, the hippocampus makes for super hot science. if only you knew what you were missing.

Ok ladies, untwist your collective panties. You are all correct that Isis generally does not condone square toes (and if I had seen them just out and about, I am not sure what my reaction would be). However, can Dr. Isis get an "Alleluia Sister" from the science choir for the fact that this science chick has her purple shoes propped up on the bar with a bunch of male colleagues at the Society for Freakin' Neuroscience (SffN)?
Posted by: Isis the Scientist | November 17, 2008 11:52 PM
Chick?? I thought we were finally getting a view of PhysioProf's tootsies.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to beg for a free pass this time, my kind dear friend. A very sad PharmKid came downstairs at 5:30 am (while I was trying to get today's lecture done) asking for a snuggle because she is so sad that PharmGirl is off at her own meeting in DC (not SfN nor the G20 summit). The poor child is relying on me for food as well and I can't hold a candle to your cooking or even that of PhysioProf!

Alright, Abel. Having to attend to PharmKid is reason enough to not have to engage in blogwars. Be well, dear friend.

DJ&MH, do we really know 1) those are "chick" feet and 2) PP is not a "chick"? hmmmm...

As the 'square toe' violation has been drawn and quartered . . .I will simply note that I too noted it. (..?? 'noted it'..?? )
I am more concerned that Isis's outpost on the blognet is simply going to morph into a bulletin board for random 'shoe porn'. More than it already is I mean.
( Well . . .truthfully, I am concerned whether I will be able to check it even more frequently if it _does_ morph into a random 'shoe porn' board . . .. )

bff, she is wearing those with socks, they have square toes, they look like they have poo splattered on them, and the heel isn't actually thick - it's just a very wide thin heel.
i am sorry, but those are hideous shoes, worn very poorly. i am quite sad.

Dear Dr. Isis,
Thank you for your kind comment on my recent post about bedtime, and for sharing yours, which was beautiful! Science, medicine, industry, none of it has to separate us from moments of beauty and immediacy like story-time with children. In fact, I suspect we become better at all of our endeavors for our times of rest and peace.
I love your blog. It is entertaining, insightful, honest and funny. My wife, a domestic goddess with a masters in counseling, is home-schooling our four progeny. And yet, she is still a devotee of hot shoes. I love her for that, as a man who is also much afflicted by high heels on his hot wife.
On a similar note, one of my favorite medical school memories is of a classmate, who was from NYC (complete with Brooklyn accent) who always started her call-night in scrubs, pearls and high heels.
Your true fan,
Edwin

As my good deed for the day, I would like to share will all Dr. Isis's shoe loving faithful that Macy's is currently having an awesome sale on boots. Public service announcement over.

Dang, I thought the square toes would indeed lose you, and I'm very glad they didn't. And on the bar is hot, but next time I want to see those framed by SHOTS.

One day I hope I can impress people with my totally hot shoes while talking about Neuroscience as well.
This year I'm just glad that I got a couple days off class because my prof was headed out there. I will have to be satisfied impressing myself with my totally hot
shoesslippers and studying neuroscience instead.Posted by: LJ | November 18, 2008 5:34 PM
I'm sorry, but I have to agree with a previous poster (though with more delicacy). Those shoes are just not hot. The heel alone says 'orthopedic surgery' to me, or at the very least an inability to stand or walk for more than a few minutes. And she's wearing them with fuzzy socks. I just bought a couple of pairs of patent leather Cole Haans with Nike Air insoles. Now THOSE are hot.

It is "hippocampi."
Unfortunately, hot shoes at an SFN meeting is damn near impossible to pull off. Unless you're in minisymposiums and lectures all day, you are on your feet most of the time.
The opportunities for drinking were amazing, as usual.
I met DM!
