The Egyptian goddess Isis was celebrated as the ideal wife and mother. The blogger known as Dr. Isis has some fancy-sounding degrees and is a physiologist at a major research university working on some terribly impressive stuff. She blogs about balancing her research career with the demands of raising small children, how to succeed as a woman in academia, and anything else she finds interesting. Also, she blogs about shoes. In fact, she blogs a lot about shoes.

...And behold, he raised the motherfucking Jameson on high as Isis bedecked her feet in glory, and the masses were sated. -- The Holy Gospel According to PhysioProf

Little Isis Says Science...

Category: Little Isis
Posted on: November 22, 2008 8:02 PM, by Isis the Scientist

Those of you who followed me from the old blog may remember that Little Isis is quite the chatterbox and Dr. Isis is trying to teach him to say science words. We have had two rounds of instruction (here and here), but it occured to me that I may have been ignoring the basics and jumping right to the senior level material.

So, with that in mind, Dr. and Little Isis have been undertaking some simpler endeavors.  Here, Little Isis shows off his mastery of the ABCs. The ABCs are crucial to things like creating the periodic table and crafting molecular formulae.  Now that he has the fundamentals down, Dr. Isis is going to start teaching him to draw the structure of the amino acids.

Video 1: Little Isis shows off his skills of an ABCs singer.

On a side note, I have learned that I can get Little Isis to do damned near anything as long as I sing "If you're happy and you know it..." before telling him the thing to do. I am wondering if that will work in the lab?

If you're happy and you know it, wash some glassware and rinse it in Nanopure water before putting it away...

But have you filled out the human subjects research paperwork?

amino acid structures and molecular formulas, you are setting this kid up for extreme nerd-dom. i am way amused.

unfortunately, grad school sucks, so your grad students are probably not happy and they know it. you might try the "if you're broke and exhausted and you know it..." line, though.

...

Uhmmm ... it is good scientific practice to rinse the glassware before putting it away..?!?

D*mn, maybe that explains so many lab tests not working recently..!!

LOL! And to Leigh, too. I like your version...

For postdocs it's more like "If you're hopelessly unemployable, clap your hands! (clap! clap!)"

My dad did this to me (albeit with physics, math, and physical chem) and I turned out perfectly fine. I think.

Oh, the amazing power of "If you're happy and you know it".

The power really gets to your head when you have a chanting horde... I mean classroom... of cute toddlers just happy to do your bidding.

Adorable. I love how at the very end of the clip the little dude finishes the ABC's rhyme and then breaks into a "yay!!!" of self-congratulation revelling in his own mastery of the alphabet.

On the subject of Little Isis' future if you change the Little to Lil' perhaps a future in the music industry beckons....

I totally taught my niece to say 'endoplasmic reticulum'. We are currently working on 'ubiquitination', which, I can barely say myself.

Although, hearing 'quinoa' come out of a babe's mouth, is perhaps the cutest thing evah!
