The American Physiological Society has another award available. This one is for undergraduates interested in doing summer research in the lab of an established (ie, hot shot) investigator. The research award provides $4000 for 10 weeks of support and a $1300 travel stipend in order to attend the annual Experimental Biology meeting.
The deadline to apply is February 2nd. Award information is here and the site to apply is here.

It's cool to give undergrads a financial leg up for getting spots in fancy, bigname labs, but it would be awful nice for them to offer support for undergrads to work in new labs, too--especially seeing as we're usually the ones without sufficient resources to commit to extra mouths to feed...

Arlenna, that's a great point and I am actally not sure what the criteria are to be an investigator in this program. "Established investigator" may include new assistant professor-level PIs. If you are interested in the opportunity to mentor an undergraduate, I would encourage you to check it out and have students apply.

See, I would totally apply for this since I'm interested in physiology.. however I don't know how this thing would work... I would have to know/contact someone to host me? I don't even know where I would begin...not to mention come up with an experiment...
I've been holed up in a theoretical ecology lab for a long time... curses of small schools... Sigh.

Right, Eugenie. You would need to identify a mentor who would be willing to host you and help you define a small project. Still, there are many folks out there who wouldn't turn down the prospect of a student with her own money and a little project funding.
