The Egyptian goddess Isis was celebrated as the ideal wife and mother. The blogger known as Dr. Isis has some fancy-sounding degrees and is a physiologist at a major research university working on some terribly impressive stuff. She blogs about balancing her research career with the demands of raising small children, how to succeed as a woman in academia, and anything else she finds interesting. Also, she blogs about shoes. In fact, she blogs a lot about shoes.

...And behold, he raised the motherfucking Jameson on high as Isis bedecked her feet in glory, and the masses were sated. -- The Holy Gospel According to PhysioProf

What Science Looks Like

Category: Stuff You Send Me
Posted on: March 28, 2009 2:14 PM, by Isis the Scientist

I think I've shared either here or on the old blog that part of what led me to a career in science was a love as a child of taking things apart. I took apart my father's clock radio, the oven in our kitchen, and I used to love spending time in the garage with my father while he worked on our cars. I still love to build things and I take great pride in knowing what a carrier demodulator is. That's a sexy word if I've ever heard one.

But I'm not the only bad ass science chick who likes to get her hands dirty and fix stuff. See:

Dirty Hands Post Isis.jpg

Figure 1: One of Dr. Isis's bad ass science chick readers after being elbows deep in an automobile. I've Photoshopped the background a bit to obscure our fair heroine's secret identity.

And speaking of ultra-cool, bad ass science chicks, one of Dr. Isis's loyal readers, superhero professor of physiology, and the associate editor of Advances in Physiology Education  sent me this awesome graphic for the ole blog:

Vesuvian_woman.jpg
Figure 2: Gift from Barb Goodman.  This graphic was created by Elizabeth Simmons.  I am in general awe of their generosity I'm going to try to incorporate it into some sweet stuff.

In all seriousness, if you teach physiology and aren't reading this, go check it out. If you're a student studying physiology and want new ways to help understand the material, go check it out.

Thanks for this pics, ladies!  You rule!

I've always been a how-stuff-works kind of gal too. The same reason why I ended up studying physiology, and also why I too love getting right in there working on my car (except yesterday I was hauling out it's engine and gearbox unfortunately :( )

...

Jewelry and auto maintenance = bad idea.

Other than that . . .way cool as always.

Gimme a girl that can check the fluids, pump it up, top it off, and all the rest and I am happy.

Ladies with greasy hands are my type of ladies.

Isis, how about teaching your Pope some science. He either has bad science advisors or he is a lier.

"Um, ok Sol. I'll get right on that on my secret Vatican bat phone."

How do you know whether or not the Pope's science advisors read your blog? I thought that as a devout Catholic scientist you would have more influence with his advisors than an advisor such as PZ or any other atheistic scientist.
