The Egyptian goddess Isis was celebrated as the ideal wife and mother. The blogger known as Dr. Isis has some fancy-sounding degrees and is a physiologist at a major research university working on some terribly impressive stuff. She blogs about balancing her research career with the demands of raising small children, how to succeed as a woman in academia, and anything else she finds interesting. Also, she blogs about shoes. In fact, she blogs a lot about shoes.

...And behold, he raised the motherfucking Jameson on high as Isis bedecked her feet in glory, and the masses were sated. -- The Holy Gospel According to PhysioProf

Things that Are Rocking My World...

Category: Food PornPhysiologyWeekly Shoe
Posted on: April 2, 2009 8:36 PM, by Isis the Scientist

I have to say, there are a few things that are totally changing my life today. Allow me to present them to you below the fold.

1) My readers.

I am currently in the second week of my click-a-thon to fund an APS David Bruce Award. When I began this little endeavor I promised the APS an amount of money with two zeros that I was nervously confident I could raise with clickage. Thanks to the very generous support of my readers (both through clicks and private donations) and the very generous support of Seed Media, we have thus far amassed a fund that ends in three zeros.

I dreamed of funding this adorable award for one year. Through your generosity after two weeks we could conceivably fund this award for multiple years and I'm humbled. But there is still two weeks to go and Isis is not too proud to beg. Consider sending this humble little blog to one other person who might find it hilarious? And also who might click a few times?  For those of you with $5 extra dollars, I have set up a PayPal account on the left, or you can take advantage of the non-profity status of the APS and donate here.

Video 1: Yup, this is Isis.

2) These fantastic shoes.

I can't help it. These shoes are absolutely rocking my universe. With a black skirt, white top, and my denim jacket, these might change my life:

Figure 1: Pounce by Carlos Santana in Sari Blue. $101 at Shoes.com.

3) Costco.  Beautiful Costco.

For years the Isises had a membership to Satan's discount warehouse.  We shopped there because it was the only such establishment in a 100 mile radius and diapers are expensive.  I would also buy meat there, bring it home, and repackage it in freezer paper to store away.  This process took for-freaking-ever, but I had convinced myself it was worth it.  Still, shopping there always made me die a little inside.   Since moving to MRU I have learned that, if I am willing to drive a bit, there is a Costco in our county.  Our previous "club" membership has expired and so today the Isises went to check out Costco.

During our little excursion I found something that has definitely changed my life.

Figure 2:  This is 5.5 pounds of chicken, individually-packed in little, beautiful packages in two breast increments.  AND the edges of the packages are perforated so that you can just tear them off and use them.  They come in plain and a three flavor pack with lemon, teriyaki, and some third delicious flavor that I cannot recall. Costco, you have made my life infinitely easier and I thank you.

I hear you, sister. Spending PharmCash at Costco makes me feel oh so good. Not only is management aligned politically with us, but they treat their employees well and provide far better salaries than the evil club.

Wherever possible, they also support innovative and environmentally-sustainable practices. My fave at Costco, and that of the mollusc-loving PharmKid, are the farm-grown clams from Cedar Key, FL, a real fishing town where UF grad students could drive to watch the sun set over the there-murky-but-still-lovely Gulf of Mexico.

Not that I'd know about such things.

I'd love to hear your opinion of the carnitas available at Costco.

Those shoes are such things of beauty they make me wish I was still painting, just so I could try to match the color.
Of course, I'd never put them on my poor, tender feet. But still. Shiny!

Wow, those (breasts!) almost make me want to cook.

I LOVE Costco! I totally repackage my meat and it save me a ton of money. Mr.SM precuts all the boneless meat, which saves even more time during the week.
Oh and those shoes would go so beautiful with my Indian Saris.

The DGT Household freezer is filled with those individual chicken packets. I would recommend disassembling the pack of six before sticking in the freezer, as they are a bit cumbersome to disassemble once fully frozen. (I can't speak for your Costco, but they are about 40-50% frozen when we purchase them.) We also have a nice pile of aliquotted, labeled, butcher paper-wrapped hamburger and steak tips from Costco.

Wow, I don't always like your shoes, but these tickle my fancy. My outfit of choice would my khaki pencil skirt, white blazer, and a chunky necklace. Hot!

Dr Isis! I think that Satan's discount warehouse is the perfect name for that place! I also just moved to a town with a Costco and am riding out my membership at Satan's discount warehouse so I can enjoy the pleasures of Costco! And, I blogged about Carlos Santana's Pounce in printed satin two days ago! They are such pretty pretty shoes!
Yay for clicks! Yay for Isis!!

Can you believe Carlos Santana wasted himself playing guitar all those years when he could have been designing shoes? I have acquired a number of his heels, and they all ROCK.... maybe that's because he played guitar all those years...
I've been tweeting about the award; hope it helps.

I LOVE Costco! It's the only place where they carry bags of coffee big enough for Sci.

Also, the latest thing they have are these. The deliciousness of them cannot be overemphasized.

I recently turned in my application for a travel award to attend a meeting full of all sorts of exciting science. There aren't many awards for undergrads to attend this meeting, and I'm sure there aren't many for the APS meeting either. So on behalf of undergrads everywhere surviving on ramen and staying away from shoe stores in order to pay registration fees, thanks :)

Also, those shoes are unbelievably gorgeous. I have been inspired to put on my own pretty shoes today. They make work so much more fun.

When I lived in Korea for a year, Satan's Discount Warehouse was a freaking lifesaver. It was a train and/or bus ride away from my city, but the GIANT HUNKS OF REAL CHEESE were so worth it. I'd buy two cheddars and a pepper jack and freeze them. Yum.

Also, JELLYBEANS.

...I suppose you don't realize the Westernisms you miss until they aren't there anymore...

Sigh. I just renewed my Satan Club membership. (Pull-ups and milk, along with whatever I can reasonably keep in the pantry. Soon we'll have a freezer for the meat.) No Costco reasonably close, or we'd be with them in a freakin' heartbeat. There's three alomst equidistant from us, but an hour round trip versus about 15 minutes -- not happening. Two of those listed are about a mile from each other -- thanks for being helpful and spreading out!

Sigh, again.

There is something to say for a hot, well-educated and shockingly smart woman who is willing to show off her breasts.

All six of them.

we received a gift card to costco and were astounded at how great it was. we had previously been members of evil warehouse city (another gift card thing) and were turned off to any and all warehouses by it. but costco... how amazing. if only it weren't a 20 minute drive from our apartment.

Dunno if they'll carry this where you're at, but even better is the pre-frozen chix breasts. Individually frozen and then put in a single bag (less packaging) you just pull them out one or ten at a time and they're supposedly hormone and antibiotic free. AND they carry good wild salmon during the season (much better for us and the fish than the farmed kind).

I love costco too :)

Not only is Costco superior by way of the stuff they carry, I like the fact that they treat their employees very well. Read about their CEO sometime and compare that to ShamsClub/EvilMart.

Glad to hear about the three zeros.. I've been clicking like crazy!!

Costco rocks. I buy chicken packaged that way at BJs, too.

If it's an issue for you, beware the sodium in those flavored-for-you packages. Preseasoned stuff is often crazy high salt.

I was wondering about the Costcobashing too! I'm totally with Abel on this one. When I first read (can't find the link, sorry, this was a few yrs back) about how different the principles of Costco were compared to Walmart, Sam's Club and such stores, I was pleasantly surprised too.
