Isis sidebar.jpg

The Egyptian goddess Isis was celebrated as the ideal wife and mother. The blogger known as Dr. Isis has some fancy-sounding degrees and is a physiologist at a major research university working on some terribly impressive stuff. She blogs about balancing her research career with the demands of raising small children, how to succeed as a woman in academia, and anything else she finds interesting. Also, she blogs about shoes. In fact, she blogs a lot about shoes.

...And behold, he raised the motherfucking Jameson on high as Isis bedecked her feet in glory, and the masses were sated. -- The Holy Gospel According to PhysioProf

Memes! On ScienceBlogs?!?!

Category: Ass Shaking Jams
Posted on: May 29, 2009 11:03 PM, by Isis the Scientist

I got tagged a few days ago over at Sundappled Forest to participate in a meme. If you ask me, ScienceBlogs is far too reputable an establishment for ridiculous memes and other such nonesense, but BikeMonkey can be a real pain in the ass. Almost troll-like. It's just best to appease that dude. Here are the instructions from the king muppethugger:

Post your best/worst covers and tag some more muppethuggers. Oh and do a linkback to whomever tagged you if it wasn't me.

So, here's the best:

Video 1: Johnny Cash's cover of the Nine Inch Nails song Hurt

And here's the worst:

Video 2: Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey singing Take My Breath Away. I was devastated when I heard this cover. This is the song that plays in my head every time I...nevermind.

And, with that, I tag Abel Pharmboy, Scribbler, Candid Engineer, leigh, Joanne Manaster, and Pascale.

What a challenge!
Still working on the audio posts; I will eventually get Carly Simon's Take Me Out To The Ballgame up; just hope I NEVER find Smoke on the Water as performed by Pat Boone!

"troll"? And Johnny Cash????? Oh you do know how to butter up, don't you? And that JS abomination is a supremely assy cover.

Well played Isis.

its not like take my breath away wasn't already an overproduced overplayed piece of 80s garbage to begin with...should have been buried not covered

I'l tell you why - it's a goddamn train wreck! It hurt so bad, I had to watch it again.

The one cover that makes me want to rip my ears off is Faith Hill's "Piece of My Heart". Let's take a classic blues ballad about abuse and desperation, and turn it into a peppy, upbeat love song! That'll work! It puts me in hunter/killer mode.

JC's "Hurt" kicks mucho ass. I wish he would have extended the guitar out at the end like the instrumental in the original, but it's still really cool.

I don't know how to determine the suckiest cover. Seether's "Careless Whisper", Alanis Morrisette's "Crazy", and the Dixie Chicks' "Landslide" all seem like good places to start. G'NR's "Live and Let Die" might be a candidate as well (although I like the song some). Every time I hear one of these songs, I want to scream, "Don't you guys have any original ideas? Or does your own music suck badly enough that mangling a cover tune is still bettter?"

Well said RB.
Another candidate for worst is Sisters Of Mercy doing Jolene.
