The Egyptian goddess Isis was celebrated as the ideal wife and mother. The blogger known as Dr. Isis has some fancy-sounding degrees and is a physiologist at a major research university working on some terribly impressive stuff. She blogs about balancing her research career with the demands of raising small children, how to succeed as a woman in academia, and anything else she finds interesting. Also, she blogs about shoes. In fact, she blogs a lot about shoes.

...And behold, he raised the motherfucking Jameson on high as Isis bedecked her feet in glory, and the masses were sated. -- The Holy Gospel According to PhysioProf

Little Isis Says Science...

Category: Little Isis
Posted on: June 3, 2009 9:00 PM, by Isis the Scientist

I realize that his been a long time since Little Isis said any science words. I have no great reason for it, other than to say that I have been caught up with all of my own recent shenanigans that I have been ignoring preschool hilarity.

So, tonight when Little Isis asked at dinner to say some science words, how could I ignore the little muffin? Here are the words he says in this edition:

  • Chrysalis
  • Hypothesis
  • Chloroplast
  • Proton
  • Fermentation
  • Fahrenheit
  • Magnetic Resonance
  • Torpor
  • Nephron
  • Relativity

How totally apropos! I was looking for a Father's Day/Birthday/Anniversary gift for my husband (yes, those are all in the same week) and stumbled across these Mad Scientist alphabet blocks!! Little Isis would totally dig these:

Aw, I was just thinking about these. I have friends whose baby's first non-mama, non-papa word was "dragon." Totally made me think of Little Isis.

Whoa...hands down, "torpor" has never sounded so cool as it does in Little Isis's voice. What a sweetie-pie!

Can you also get Little Isis to say science words in Spanish?

Looking forward to the bilingual edition,

perceval ;)

I have to simplify my pseudonym so that I have a shot at hearing it in Little Isis' voice. Too cute!

It amused my family and friends to no end when my two-year-old son properly pronounced and could give a very general definition of the word "hydrodynamics".

It had come up when discussing the water running out of the tub. With geeks for parents, neither of my kids stand a chance.

OMG, I can't wait until my daughter's old enough for this.

Don't forget about the "phalangees." A long forgotten goal was to teach my 18 month old twins the proper latin names for parts of the body instead of the usual "hands", "fingers", and "toes". Unfortunately phalangees is the only one I remember from my high school anatomy days.

Tsk, tsk. "Fahrenheit" is not a science word. ;)
