Earlier today The American Physiological Society's Director of Government Relations and Science Policy (and generally awesome woman) Alice Ra'anan sent me this email:
Dear Dr. Isis,
I was wondering whether this request for donations is the kind of thing you might wish to bring to the attention of your readers.
The first Michael Hayre Fellow was Tom Holder. He founded Pro-Test and spoke on campuses around the country. And yes, being young and hip, he used FaceBook and Twitter. This year Americans for Medical Progress would like to sponsor two Hayre Fellows, but they need to raise another $15,000 in order to do so.
Do you think this is something that would interest your readers?
Alice
Attached to the email was a link to the Michael D. Hayre Fellowship for Public Outreach. Here's a description of the fellowship:
The AMP/Hayre Fellowship program seeks to find and support college students and young adults here in the United States who are just as frustrated by the domination of animal rights rhetoric against biomedical research and who are committed to making a case for the necessary and humane use of laboratory animals in the pursuit of treatments and cures. As an AMP Hayre Fellow, by developing innovative outreach programs for your peers to lead them in making an informed decision about this issue, you will be helping to secure the future of medicine.
Sounds like a worthy cause to this humble but incredibly hot research scientist. If you're interested in applying for the fellowship the next deadline is May 15, 2010. More importantly, if you're interested in contributing to the fellowship, you can click here.

Thanks Isis.
Several excellent candidates have applied for the 2009/2010 Michael D. Hayre fellowship, it would be great if we could offer it to two of them.
