Isis sidebar.jpg

The Egyptian goddess Isis was celebrated as the ideal wife and mother. The blogger known as Dr. Isis has some fancy-sounding degrees and is a physiologist at a major research university working on some terribly impressive stuff. She blogs about balancing her research career with the demands of raising small children, how to succeed as a woman in academia, and anything else she finds interesting. Also, she blogs about shoes. In fact, she blogs a lot about shoes.

...And behold, he raised the motherfucking Jameson on high as Isis bedecked her feet in glory, and the masses were sated. -- The Holy Gospel According to PhysioProf

Isis Ends Her Hiatus...

Category: Official ScienceBlogs Business
Posted on: July 6, 2009 10:55 AM, by Isis the Scientist

A few minutes ago I received this email from the Overlords:

Hi Isis,

As far as I can tell they finally corrected it- they halted all ads from that network. I haven't seen any bad ads last night or this morning andfriends I've been clicking around for awhile. Our ad VP suggested that if some readers are still seeing bad ads, they may need to clear their cache for them to stop showing up. Otherwise, all looks good!

- The Overlords

So, there you go. We can resume our shenanigans, which is good because being away from my little muffins sucked hard and I have so many things to tell you. I tried to retreat to my Blogspot blog, but it just didn't feel right. For better or worse, this is my home now and it's where many of my friends all are

It's really easy to walk away from something when one finds their sensibilities offended, but it's more difficult to stay and try to reach an understanding.  I am thankful that Seed took the concerns that Zuska, our readers, and I expressed seriously.

One of you made a very valid point in my comments section...that perhaps my hiatus was was not enough.  You wrote:

Will you be returning the money SB pays you for blogging with them? Some at least of that will have come from clicks on the ads you despise.
Fair enough, little muffin.  In my haste to put myself on hiatus, I did not consider the personal revenue I would receive directly from your clicks and indirectly from the display of those ads.  That makes me just as complicit as ScienceBlogs in the exploitation, doesn't it?  At the end of the month, when I see my final blog clicks, I will donate 1/6 of my blog income (the duration of time the ads appeared on my blog) to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

I'll be back later in the day.  I've got a letter from ScientistMother to answer, some shoes, tales of my life-threatening vacation adventures, some thoughts on the media, and all sorts of other things to talk with you about.

Plus, I'm not going to tell you who, but someone is having an anniversary...

Dr. Isis, I was that little muffin, and I applaud the decision you've taken about your SB blog income. Nice one.

Glad you have that. Thanks!

You need to go away again to make it stick and redo the math. The ads are still there. The photos of the lovely brides are not there but the text links are still appearing on your site.

I was getting target baby ads and shoes here now. This strikes me as Marketing Win.

Hoorah! Score one for polite protest. Thank you, Isis and the other Scibloggers who made so much awareness of this issue, and pass on my thanks to Seed for taking it seriously and changing it.

Perhaps we celebrate prematurely?

A comment at 2:43 pm today (July 6) on my blog reads:

"The ad at the top of the page right now is from Snap Linkad and reads: Mail Order Brides Click Here Steam Iron Click Here Ironing Click Here Migraines Click Here Mail Order Bride Click Here Private Insurance Click Here Timekeeping Click Here Omni Click Here Animal Behavior Click Here Windows Install Click Here Gould Click Here Wrinkles Click Here Pillow Cases Click Here Molybdenum"

Dammit.

There have been no nasty ads on my computer. According to the email I got from Science Blogs, the problem is being addressed. It may take time for them all to disappear, however.

I've got my eye on becoming Executive Director of the APS. Or maybe president. Or both.

Happy anniversary, Isis! Time does fly.

My $.02: I can't say I've seen one of those ads ever, save the screenshot you posted before your hiatus.

It's not nearly as bad, and since I'm not paying for content I can't complain much (or expect anyone to listen, rather), but Seed seems to like the direct email ads with "99% delivery to inbox". Um, spammers should be seen (hanging from posts by their toes while being nommed by rabid wolverines) and not heard, OK?
