The Egyptian goddess Isis was celebrated as the ideal wife and mother. The blogger known as Dr. Isis has some fancy-sounding degrees and is a physiologist at a major research university working on some terribly impressive stuff. She blogs about balancing her research career with the demands of raising small children, how to succeed as a woman in academia, and anything else she finds interesting. Also, she blogs about shoes. In fact, she blogs a lot about shoes.

...And behold, he raised the motherfucking Jameson on high as Isis bedecked her feet in glory, and the masses were sated. -- The Holy Gospel According to PhysioProf

Dr. Isis is Leaving

Category: Little IsisMotherhood
Posted on: September 26, 2009 12:55 PM, by Isis the Scientist

Dr. Isis leaves next week for a conference and will be away for about 9 days. I am trying to tell myself that I am going to see some amazing science and that this will be very good for my career. I am telling myself that I am going to have the opportunity to share some of our exciting new data with some collaborators, but the reality is that my heart is a little sick about leaving.

On Friday I had a conversation with folks in the lab about goals for the week while I am gone, and I feel very comfortable that they will achieve them while I am away. I know that the time away will give me the opportunity to finalize the two articles that are sitting on my desk (er, harddrive) waiting to go out, finish the planning for our next study, and look at new data that we've collected.

That doesn't make leaving home for this long any easier. Little Isis is at an age where each week presents some new achievement or interest. These last few weeks Little Isis has been all about Blue's Clues and on Thursday we took him out and bought him his very own handy, dandy notebook.

Today he decided that our dog had been a very, very good boy this morning and that he deserved a sticker....

Is in to art projects...

And is training to become an accomplished scientist himself, learning about butterflies...

Amazing! He is one very bright child, but that's not surprising considering who his parents are.
