The Egyptian goddess Isis was celebrated as the ideal wife and mother. The blogger known as Dr. Isis has some fancy-sounding degrees and is a physiologist at a major research university working on some terribly impressive stuff. She blogs about balancing her research career with the demands of raising small children, how to succeed as a woman in academia, and anything else she finds interesting. Also, she blogs about shoes. In fact, she blogs a lot about shoes.

...And behold, he raised the motherfucking Jameson on high as Isis bedecked her feet in glory, and the masses were sated. -- The Holy Gospel According to PhysioProf

Assistant Professor Position in Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at Purdue

Category: Science Careers
Posted on: October 11, 2009 11:35 AM, by Isis the Scientist

One of my favorite little birdies emailed me this morning to tell me about a position at his/her institution that my readers might have some interest in. Here is the standard language from the ad in Science:

The Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, Purdue University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor. Research in the Department is highly interdisciplinary with strengths in molecular pharmacology, cancer biology, neuroscience, chemical biology, drug design, systems biology, and computational chemistry (website:http://www.mcmp.purdue.edu/research/). The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in pharmacology or a related field, appropriate postdoctoral experience, and the potential to establish a vigorous research program and will participate in undergraduate, pharmacy, and graduate education.

Applicants are sought with research interests in any area of molecular pharmacology including, but not limited to, signal transduction, protein structure and function, drug-receptor interactions, drug discovery, and pharmacogenomics.

For full consideration, please submit a single PDF file to Ms. Angie Schutz, e-mail: arschutz@purdue.edu containing the following items: a cover letter, a full curriculum vitae (including publications and research and teaching experience) and a statement of research plans (not to exceed two pages). Applicants should arrange to have three letters of reference sent directly to the same e-mail address. Please direct any questions regarding this position or application requirements to the Chair of the Search Committee, Dr. Gregory Hockerman, e-mail: gregh@purdue.edu.

Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access/Affirmative Action Employer fully committed to achieving a diverse work force.

This little birdie also mentioned that the search committee for this position is especially interested in interviewing qualified minority and women candidates. As this little birdie says:

As monocultural as my department looks on paper, everyone here is really cool people, we have a great atmosphere and a very friendly, down-to-earth departmental community. People here TRULY COLLABORATE without fearing for their independence. I have been welcomed without hesitation into the group and feel very at home here, and our department head is really fantastic. In general people here are just straight-up folks. We have a formalized junior faculty mentorship program as well as an informal weekly lunch together that I have found totally invaluable to getting on my feet. Our tenure requirements are very rigorous, but everyone seems to be doing their best to help each other make it through (rather than trying to turf each other out). All in all, I think this is an excellent place to start a career and I couldn't be happier with my choice to join this department.

So, if you're a pharmacologist considering a faculty position, check out this listing!
