The Egyptian goddess Isis was celebrated as the ideal wife and mother. The blogger known as Dr. Isis has some fancy-sounding degrees and is a physiologist at a major research university working on some terribly impressive stuff. She blogs about balancing her research career with the demands of raising small children, how to succeed as a woman in academia, and anything else she finds interesting. Also, she blogs about shoes. In fact, she blogs a lot about shoes.

...And behold, he raised the motherfucking Jameson on high as Isis bedecked her feet in glory, and the masses were sated. -- The Holy Gospel According to PhysioProf

Do it Yourself Botox

Posted on: October 31, 2009 5:18 PM, by Isis the Scientist

Hey, PalMD and Orac! Look, I don't need you stinkin' physicians anymore!

I am learning to do my own Botox...

Figure 1: If you decide to do your own Botox, you totally deserve what you get. I love that she tells her audience to dilute their Botox in 100cc of saline. I would personally pay money to see her inject 100cc of saline into her face.

That's the smallest 100 cc syringe I ever saw. I also didn't see her clean the vial top or her face.

Who is dumb enough to inject a dangerous poison into their face without a doctor present? This is just waiting for a death and a lawsuit. How do they even obtain the botox? If they're using an online "pharmacy" there's no way to know the potency or if it really is botox.

Of course it's Botox.

She made it herself. Leftover egg salad from the 4th of July picnic, grade-A eggs and name brand mayonnaise, only the best quality for this lady. Leave it out for a week. Add water, stir, strain through a sock to take out the lumps.

i was going to just say that watching her wave that uncapped syringe around made me cringe. but as i watched more, that whole thing made me cringe.

botox was the subject of friday's random drug fact.

Mayonnaise? Impostor! Everyone knows you'd need unpasteurized honey.

I just use puffy cans as my botox source.

Well, she did say 100 units before she said 100cc, (100 insulin units is 1cc). And IIRC the two possible negative outcomes are hitting the wrong muscle, or, because BTX is a protein, allergic reactions up to and including Anaphylaxis. But GAGH!!!! touching the septa with her fingers, touching her face after she said she "cleaned" it.... MRSA here we come.

Better get it quick Isis, I think the safety Nazis at the FDA are going to shut it down because they hate women.

I think Harold is right, puffy cans are a better source. The Clostridia are obligate anaerobes. They also produce a compound that is exquisitely sensitive to NO, down to femtomolar levels.

I suggest following becca's suggestion, inject some honey into a can of condensed milk, solder it shut and wait for it to get puffy. Use lead-free solder, you wouldn't want to inject any heavy metals, those are bad for you, they reduce your IQ, and people following these directions don’t have any IQ points to spare.

Oh my god. Who the hell is this woman and WTF is she thinking? And who the hell gave her botox to self-administer at home?

My favorite bit: "Don’t do any drawings on your face ... because then you can tattoo yourself with the needle." Priceless.

I suppose people deserve what they get....

Frankly, the whole botox injecting fad scares the hell out of me. Why can't people show their age anymore? I think "age" looks really attractive on most people, anyway. I especially love crow's feet around a person's eyes... even since I was a kid. It usually indicated a jovial disposition.

Sooner or later, somebody is going to drop a couple of decimal points and things are going to go way downhill.

My favorite part is, "I'm going to show you these expressions now because I probably won't be able to make them tomorrow."

Wow. DIY Botox. What's next: ricin for the rest of us?

Well diabetics do it every day. I don't see anyone knocking them down!

Posted by: Lee | December 3, 2009 10:55 PM

Diabetics stick themselves in a surface they can see without a mirror (abdomen or thigh), and it's relatively uninnervated. Besides, insulin-dependent diabetics HAVE to inject themselves to remain alive, and vain people don't.

Botox is good for singles (in search for a soul mate).
Botox is good for singles, male or female with experience in walking their respective dogs (until they learn to bark).
Botox is rather inefficient (does not last more than a couple of months). It leaves the mark of injection for ever. However, there is always the option for botox lovers to call the FBI and file a complaint for misuse of private funds. If you, however, managed to show up in a photo with your private botox sponsor you will have the option of plastic surgery for free. That will take care of permanent marks.
