First, let me give a heartfelt thanks to those of you who have given to the DonorsChoose projects I have selected. To date we have helped to fully fund 13 projects and I could not be more proud of the folks who read my blog and generously opened their wallets for this cause.
Through Twitter I have become acquainted with one of the teachers (@sumrthyme) from my project list. I asked her if she could tell me a little more about her school and she said:
I teach kindergarten in rural South Carolina. Our district was featured in the Corridor of Shame documentary. ( http://www.corridorofshame.com/)
This is my 33rd year teaching. I still love teaching and truly consider it my calling, not just a job.
All of my schools funds have been frozen. We have received no money for classroom supplies or materials this year. 93% of our students receive free or reduced lunches so parental contributions are rare. In a "good' year, I usually get $600.00 to purchase supplies and materials. Most of this is spent on consumable items. I may have some money left to purchase 1 or 2 items such as learning center activities or manipulatives. We did not lose any teachers this year.We are very grateful for this. Some positions were not filled if teachers and/or assistants retired or left due to other reasons. Some faculty/staff had to change schools.
We are not hiring substitutes this year. If a teacher is out, the students are placed in other classrooms. This results in loss of instruction for several classes. This has really hurt teacher morale at my school. DonorsChoose has been a tremendous blessing to me and my students. Through the generosity of donors, I have gotten many items that have enriched my students' instruction and educational experiences. Some of these include:
- LeapFrog Tag Readers and books
- materials for a wring center -crayons, pencils, journals, writing paper..
- math games and manipulatives
- a sand water table with molds
- an art easel, paints, play dough
It breaks my heart to think that a teacher should have to feel grateful that someone provided her students with paint and crayons and pencils. These items should be commonplace in a classroom and no teacher should have to beg for them.
So, thank you again for your efforts to provide these items to budding scientists.
Now, on to business. You see, I was very happy to participate simply to do something good for others. Some of the rest of you seem to believe that this must be a competition to see who can raise the most. Apparently beating Isis at something earns you some kind of notch in your blog belt. Recently, fellow ScienceBlogger and nurse hater PalMD said this via his Twitter (@palmd):
Why do @drisis readers hate children? Why? My pitifully small readership is still ahead in #donorschoose http://bit.ly/4dYRqLAnd DrugMonkey (@drugmonkeyblog) joined in with:
Yo, @drisis im kicking your hot ass at #donorschoose ! why do your readers hate children? Why?
I can't believe that the @palmd readers have surpassed the minions and little chickens of @drisis !! #donorschooseI say, don't you remember what happened to the last dude who thought he could beat me at something?
But, alright, bitches. If you ask for war, then war you shall have.
I got to thinking, what do I possibly have that could make some of you open your wallets just a little bit wider...or even open your wallets at all? Well, there's only one thing I have that some of you want.
My identity.
So, here's the deal, little chickens. Dr. Isis is currently third on the Scienceblogs leader board, very, very close behind PalMD and Chad Orzel. You help me teach these boys (not Chad, but Pal and Brother Drug) the consequences of talking trash and I will post for my little chickens a full head to toe video of Dr. Isis in all her glory, dancing like a little chicken.
How badly do you want to see Dr. Isis?

Comments
It is so sad that so many schools lack basic supplies. I am appalled that even in my well-funded, excellent public schools the supply list asks each child to buy 2 boxes of tissues to stock the classroom. If I could, I would fund every one of these projects.
I am pacing myself, though. May go back in the last week of the month for another one, even though I don't particularly want to know the identity of the goddess' alter ego...

By the way, I love children (I have 2 and I'm in pediatrics). I love nurses as well. So take that, boys!

Fuck.

I'm not much help with the ScienceBlogs contest here, but note that the push got me to looking around donorschoose and I've donated to two projects closer to my home and one of them is now fully funded.
I just wanted you to know that you make an impact that you can't always measure.

Heh.
Posted by: Isis the Scientist | October 14, 2009 3:06 PM
Thanks, Donna. It's for the kids!
Posted by: PalMD | October 14, 2009 3:12 PM
Yes. It's for the kids.
And humiliating Pal for trash talking.
Posted by: Isis the Scientist | October 14, 2009 3:13 PM
I'm sure St. Peter will put the tick in the Isis column Donna...
Posted by: El Picador | October 14, 2009 3:44 PM
Dude, I wait to donate to your projects to see what your SuperSpecialIncentive will be and that's all I get?
Time to go give more money to Pal. Although I'm annoyed with his arrogant Dr. Schtick. Oh well. Maybe DM this time around...

What the balls more do you want from me, Becca? A video of me in the flesh isn't enough?
Posted by: Isis the Scientist | October 14, 2009 4:27 PM
Maybe DM this time around...
Yes, by all means. We are all about the children and would not engage in any tawdry shenanigans or #FWDAOTI like this pair of ego maniacs..

Arrogant??? Arrogant???????
What would you know about arrogant? Do you have the experience *I* have? Cuz if you don't, you are not qualified to judge my arrogance.
/over the top rant

Whoa.
Posted by: Asphericity | October 14, 2009 7:17 PM
You know, you could help kids, teach those boys a lesson, and still protect Dr. Isis's identity by making a donation to my challenge.
Just saying.

Wow! I think that was the definition of free-riding there, Free-Ride.

"What the balls more do you want from me, Becca? " Honestly? I want to meet you in person.
If that is not an option, I suppose I could settle for a dance *with* an actual live chicken, whilst singing wheels on the bus.
Or I could settle for a post on one of the following topics:
A) The role feminists have to play in reforming the Catholic church
B) Why CPP is a goatfucker
C) The role of inflammation in cardiovascular diseases (with commentary on NO levels)
@DM- you just earned $5 for the kids solely by use of the phrase "tawdry shenanigans".
@PalMD- I have more arrogance in my left toe than you could ever muster. I am the Mighty Lizard Queen, afterall.
You may have more years of arrogance than I, but I am dripping with an incredibly concentrated form.

You've convinced me. I'm headed over to White Coat Underground to punch in some money for Michigan.
Posted by: D. C. Sessions | October 15, 2009 3:55 PM
Actually becca, the inflammation of cardiovascular disease is secondary to low NO levels.
Posted by: daedalus2u | October 15, 2009 4:04 PM
Yeah, I see right through you. You're just trying to suck daedalus2u into this blogwar.
Why not go for the gold and work in some retroviruses and a squid or two?
Posted by: D. C. Sessions | October 15, 2009 4:15 PM
Bite me, Sessions.
Posted by: Isis the Scientist | October 15, 2009 5:35 PM
Isis, why do you hate kids in Michigan?
Posted by: D. C. Sessions | October 15, 2009 5:40 PM
D.C.- I have many objectives. The key to success is to choose such that all paths lead to a form of victory. Sucking daedalus2u into a blogwar could be made to serve my purposes. Excellent *Monty Burns hands*
I haven't gone after the retrovirologists and squid-fetishists because they are quite obviously godless children killing machines (much like bears). They're beyond redemption.
Also:
*Swearing is childish
*Marijuana is harmless
*Funding vivisection is worse than our tax dollars going to gitmo
*Nurses should be paid way more than doctors
*Homeschooling is the only real solution to the problems in schools (oh wait. That one's for Greggie. But given the donorschoose context, it'll probably work as broad-spectrum bait)

Donation made! Kick PalMD and Drug Monkey's keisters! I am wondering though, is there any way (or a site or organization) that people can donate their old things to schools? Calculators, art supplies, books, etc?

becca FTW! she is the master... whoa, that almost came off wrong...
she's the baiting master.

Isis,
Thanks so much for posting my note. Yes, it is sad but I'll definitely BEG to help my students. My science project was fully funded and the materials come in Thursday!!! My students and I are thrilled.
On Tuesday, we were told we would not be getting any money for supplies. I've posted another project for basic supplies to get me through this year and to begin next year.
Thank you so much!
@sumrthyme

Funding should come from the state at a per-student level. It's ridiculous to let the cities fund it, especially when some of them send four times as much to schools in rich neighbourhoods as in poor neighbourhoods.
