The Egyptian goddess Isis was celebrated as the ideal wife and mother. The blogger known as Dr. Isis has some fancy-sounding degrees and is a physiologist at a major research university working on some terribly impressive stuff. She blogs about balancing her research career with the demands of raising small children, how to succeed as a woman in academia, and anything else she finds interesting. Also, she blogs about shoes. In fact, she blogs a lot about shoes.

...And behold, he raised the motherfucking Jameson on high as Isis bedecked her feet in glory, and the masses were sated. -- The Holy Gospel According to PhysioProf

An Open Letter...

Category: Open Letter
Posted on: November 23, 2009 10:12 PM, by Isis the Scientist

To my current husband and the presumed father of my children.

Dear Pookie,

You really suck. I mean, you really, really suck right now and I am not happy.

See, here's the situation - you know that I don't watch a whole lot of television. In fact, I've got so much going on that I am really selective. Part of my ability to live sans mucho televisión is having the awesome skill of being able to resist the latest pop culture trends. I am a freakin' master.

Six years ago when Lost began, I resisted. I resisted like a motherfucking champ. Even though all of my labmates were talking about it, I kept my head down and my eyes on the assay. Recently you have been all up in my business about watching Lost so that we could watch it together when the season begins again.

So, I started watching it. In fact, I have been really, really watching it. In the last 2 weeks I have watched seasons 1-3 and I am two episodes into season 4.

So, tonight when you started this holier than thou bullshit, telling me "Honey, you've been watching a lot of Lost lately. Why don't we watch something else? I think you need a break," all I could do is tell you to suck it. I mean, dude, you started this and now I need to know what happens to Jack and Kate and Sawyer. You started this!

So, don't act like you know what is good for me. You don't know me. You don't know what's good for me. Just give me my fucking Lost back and no one will get hurt.

Don't tell me what I can't do,
Isis

Wouldn't all this have been avoided if you had smothered Mr. Isis like you said you would a week or two ago? You are seriously setting a bad example for all of your devoted worshipers.

I knew I should have had my wife copyright that phrase years ago. Damn.

I would just like to point out that it is radically more efficient to watch everything at once like this. Mr. Isis should be learning from Dr. Isis.

"Pookie" is the local nickname for this animal. Does Mr Isis look like this?

Can I just say from experience - don't buy the complete box set of West Wing. My wife was not seen for weeks.

Of course when I got the Cosmos box set to watch with my youngest daughter - that wasn't the same thing cause that's edumacational.

:-)

What, you mean Cosmos has a box set? Since when? Or is this one of those things only Americans get to enjoy, like an enormous sense of misplaced self-satisfaction or cheese on everything...

Lost is like crack. I lost three weeks to that show back in the spring semester.

@6 APic:
Cosmos, one of my all-time favs, indeed has a boxed set. Currently selling on the DiscoveryStore for USD129.95. I am assuming they are region 1 DVDs, so won't work natively outside of North America. You can find non-English (and links to the English) versions at http://www.carlsagan.com, then navigate to "books and DVDs," but I have no idea about whether other regions available.

Way, way too late. Ray Charles. Although Lesley Gore seems more appropriate under the circumstances.

I learned early on in marraige to not interfere with my wife's viewing habits. If she's not happy nobody's happy.

This is by far the best way to watch a series. I have trouble watching anything on a regular schedule, and if the plot runs from week to week I get confused. I discovered this with The Office, a show my husband hates (but my son, who shares my sarcastic-ass sense of humor loves along with me). Every fall I buy the last season's DVDs and go on a viewing marathon. Hubby can leave the room if he doesn't like it, and a lot of them get viewed while I'm working in the kitchen. Way more efficient than parking myself in front of the tube at the same time each week.
I guess it would be more economical to DVR the season and then do the marathon except: (1) Our DVR limits me to a single TV for viewing and (2) Our DVR is choked with other shows at the moment that I can watch on the treadmill. Also a lot of college football games my "men" have thus far refused to erase.

DVD is truly the best way to watch a series. Problem I have found, though, is that I have one series I truly adore (the West Wing) and could watch over and over and over again. When I was living completely alone the first time as a first year grad student, I had no cable, no internet, but two seasons of the West Wing on DVD. We became friends. Now-husband bought me the rest of the seasons (he got sick of watching just the first two).

It's like an old friend I can't get up- if I'm having trouble sleeping, I pop in a disc. And while hubby *rarely* complains, when he does, it can be very poorly timed. (Bad day+ hubby criticizing TV watching= watch out!)

He should just let you watch. Everyone needs a little escape :)

Yeah, my wife is old but not quite that old. (...and I can only say that because she does not read here...)

I thought Lesley Gore was You Don't Own Me..??

But yeah, that one definitely fits the post's theme.

Ah Lost, how you eat my brain. My BF and I each have our own Lost blog to read. When our best couple friends broke up, the thought was "Who will we watch Lost with?"

I watched the whole first season in a few days, then flew cross-country. That, I don't recommend.

Mayhap Mr. Isis and Little Isis could have some Man time until you catch up with season 6?

I always liked Ben Folds' version -- ignoramus berating his girlfriend (backing vocals of Regina Spektor) who, at the very end of the song, completely pwns him with a shattered but defiant "Say it!"

Welcome to the world of Lost obssessed. Just wait to the current season starts and you start reading the blogs - all sorts of good theories about what's going on. Even MORE of a time suckage!

@ D.C., tom: I was thinking Leslie Gore, too.

Awhile back, I watched a few (~4) of the first episodes of "Lost", before I got overwhelmed with the need to catch up with 4 seasons of "The Wire" before season 5 began - because I. also, have an awesome ability to be oblivious of cultural trends. So I left "Lost" on the back burner.

But I do watch series that people I like have recommended. So, Hmm.

Ay! There goes the weekend...

Yeah, this is exactly how my partner and I ended up watching Lost in marathon sessions until we finished. I really don't watch any other TV, but I'd be like, you know, it's only 11 pm and we could watch a fourth episode and still be able to get up for work on time, no problem!

"Pookie" is the local nickname for this animal.

Also the not-terribly-stable female lead in "The Sterile Cuckoo." Played by Liza Minelli in the movie.

DVD is truly the best way to watch a series.

My DVD time is restricted to workouts. The stair machine and weights are the only real furniture in the room with the big monitor, so I can either read e-books or watch DVD while working out. Or you could think of it as having to work out while watching, whatever floats your boat.

Twofers -- yagotta love 'em.

@6 APic:

I am in Ireland so have to get PAL version of Cosmos. The Carl Sagan site only sells US versions afaik but I got mine through Amazon from a buyer - it was the English version (watch out cause there are some Dutch ones - which are fine unless you want to read the packaging) and it was wrapped - didn't look second hand.

Thanks TGAP and Morgan! Will check it out. Fortunately i have a multi-region DVD player so can view Region 1. Sounds like an ideal christmas present! Will spread the word...

DVD is the only way to watch tv series. This is usually because i'm so impatient and always need to know what. happens. next...!

And Mmmm. Bluray...

Cosmos fans with Netflix subscriptions may also appreciate the fact that the entire series can be streamed online there. Also, some totally rad David Attenborough specials. I love my nerdy Netflix!
