Photo of the Day #464: White-tailed deer with a broken leg

Category: MammalsPhotography
Posted on: January 16, 2009 6:40 PM, by Brian Switek

I had not noticed it at the time I took this picture, but this juvenile white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) had a compound fracture on it's lower left hind limb. It had been limping a little, but I did not figure out why until I saw this image.

Turtle Man, an animal parts supplier and buddy of mine, had a ton of deer legs stored in my garage this fall. Broken and subsequently healed bones are not at all rare in deer. Yes, there is a market for quantities of any animal part you care to name.
