A Question About Tobias

Posted on: April 29, 2007 11:44 AM, by Mike

Friday, Deputy Secretary of State Randall L. Tobias resigned because he had received 'massages' from an escort service. One of Tobias' major effects on U.S. foreign policy was to promote abstinence-only sex education:

Tobias, who was in Berlin for the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS' 2004 Awards for Business Excellence, said that promoting abstinence and monogamy are "far more effective" than distributing condoms for preventing the spread of HIV, according to Agence France-Presse. "Statistics show that condoms really have not been very effective," Tobias said, adding, "It's been the principal prevention device for the last 20 years, and I think one needs only to look at what's happening with the infection rates in the world to recognize that has not been working." PEPFAR has been criticized by AIDS advocates for placing "false hopes" on abstinence and monogamy prevention programs, according to Agence France-Presse.

One of the sources of the spread of AIDS, particularly in Africa, are girls who, because of poverty, are either forced into outright prostitution or having sugar daddies (who have had multiple sex partners). Giving these girls condoms, and promoting their use, literally saves lives.

So, here's my question about Tobias:

When Tobias received his 'massages', did he use a condom?

Just asking.

an aside: Yes, we should be asking if prostitution should be legalized. No, that does not absolve Tobias or any of the other sanctimonious pricks who oppose effective sex education of the deaths that they will have caused.

As I mentioned in my blog, you don't go to an escort service for massages. It just doesn't work that way.

I don't care so much that the guy ordered services from an escort service (though his job makes it the height of hypocrisy, that *does* bother me), I care much more that he lied about it.

I'm looking forward to seeing whom else gets caught up in this.

Yes, and let me tell you. I certainly got offered a few of those "massages" on my recent trip to Cape Town. Sure, I was feeling a little tight from the morning's hike, but on the other hand I thought that a Tobias-style massage might not really be what the doctor ordered....

Scandal after scandal, is there a zoological word for a large flock of chickens coming home to roost?
