I think the investigative power the Democrats currently wield--and the threat of subpoena--is starting to get to Secretary of State Condoleeza "Ferragamos" Rice. At a press conference today, Rice misidentified Russia (emphasis mine):
"The idea that somehow 10 interceptors and a few radars in Eastern Europe are going to threaten the Soviet strategic deterrent is purely ludicrous, and everybody knows it," Ms. Rice said before a meeting of NATO foreign ministers expected to focus on the missile-defense dispute."The Russians have thousands of warheads," Ms. Rice said. "The idea that you can somehow stop the Soviet strategic nuclear deterrent with a few interceptors just doesn't make sense."
Still, Ms. Rice said the United States would continue discussing the system with Russian officials, in an effort to "demystify" it. She planned to meet the foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, later on Thursday.
Soviets? They're cracking....

Trust me, I hold no brief whatsoever for Rice. But I have myself said "Soviet" when I meant "Russian" - habits can be hard to break.
If she'd said it in her presentation/speech that would be one thing, but "before" the meeting? Let's focus on the myriad substantive reasons to remove her (and the rest) from power, not a slip of the tongue from someone who was, after all, trained in Soviet studies.

Clearly, she hasn't moved past her dissertation. This should surprise no one. These people still want to live in an idealized version of the 1950s that never existed.
In no way are they capable of dealing with a threat from religious zealots since they themselves are the flip side of the same coin.
It really infuriates me that these people are dooming my son because of superstitious nonsense and a reliance on oil.
I've really come to think that oil is religion.

Gee The Ridger, how many "nobody could have imagined", "nobody could have predicted", "I don't recall" "I didn't read [the whole 90-page paper critical to my job]" statements do we need from Rice before we regognise slips like this as indicators of a lazy -- dangerously lazy, given her jobs in the administration -- person who just doesn't engage her brain at work? This is like a high foreign policy official meeting with Hitler in the mid-30s and then repeatedly referring to their meeting with "the Kaiser".
You can't take someone like that seriously, and one thing the USA needs is someone in Condi's various administration jobs who can be taken seriously both at home and abroad.
