A survey of Florida teens’ sexual health knowledge yielded some very disturbing results:

A recent survey that found some Florida teens believe drinking a cap of bleach will prevent HIV and a shot of Mountain Dew will stop pregnancy has prompted lawmakers to push for an overhaul of sex education in the state.

There’s been a lot said in favor of real sex ed and against abstinence-only ‘education’ (and rightly so), but, if the consequences of unwanted pregnancy and HIV weren’t so serious, this other finding would be funny:

The survey showed that Florida teens also believe that smoking marijuana will prevent a person from getting pregnant.

So, will the Drug Warriors now support sex-ed?

    I was talking with a docu filmmaker who works with PP and was doing work with kids in DSS and sexuality education. The weed thing is actually grounded in some of the lessons they’ve learned–smoking pot lowers sperm counts (I think this is the part that’s backed up by some research–but lots of weed over time, obviously), so if you smoke pot ahead of time, the underinformed reasoning goes, you’ll lower your sperm count and make pregnancy less likely.

    Well if we look at the correlation between those who advocate zero-tolerance of marijuana use and those who oppose birth control, the conclusion is well… amusing.

    If you drink enough bleach, it will probably kill you, so yes, I suppose one could say THAT would prevent pregnancy.

    Florida also has some of the highest infant mortality rates for non-Caucasians in the country.

    I think there’s something in the water down there. Methyl mercury, if I’m not mistaken. It’s not the sun that burns, it’s the stupid.

    surveys on sex education would do best and sometimes would go worse.. so keep an eye watch on that part..
