The Homunculus

steve_icon_medium.jpgThe Omnibrain is a psychology graduate student at an online university. He hopes that the three weeks and $29.95 that he is spending on his Ph.D. will get him a job at a Tier 1 research university. Do online universities have postdocs? Ok...just kidding, The Omnibrain is a real graduate student at a real school somewhere in the continental United States - or maybe Europe.

tupac.jpgWhich for Tupac means "Never Ignorant Getting Goals Accomplished." Some people might disagree though - it seems that there is an academic conference to discuss whether the use of the word Nigga or Nigger is appropriate and if so in what circumstances.

Here's the CNN story highlights:

• Four-day forum to address origin of epithet, whether variations are acceptable
• City councils have joined nationwide effort to convince people to stop using slur
• Professor: Whites using the word less frequently, but still thinking it
• Web site co-founder: Striking word from use would set example for other races

And thanks to brtkrbzhnv and brian... here's a little fun video :)

From Family Guy:

Jim: What did you just call me?
Huck Griffin: I thought that was your name.
Jim: That is our word. You have no right to use it.
Huck Griffin: Hey hey hey, I'm cool, I'm cool, no problem!
[pause]
Huck Griffin: So, could you pass me the oar, 'n-word Jim'?
Jim: Thank you.

I can't believe they're holding a conference for something seemingly so trivial. Even if these folks can agree on when the term is offensive, I don't see what they hope to accomplish from it. Simply agreeing on when and where the term is inappropriate is not going to blot it out of existence.
