The Homunculus

steveSteve Higgins is a psychology graduate student at an online university. He hopes that the three weeks and $29.95 that he is spending on his Ph.D. will get him a job at a Tier 1 research university. Do online universities have postdocs? Ok...just kidding, Steve is a real graduate student at a real school.

blogging_comic.jpg Two shiny new neuroblogs for your blogroll, launched in the last couple of weeks.

Somatopsychic is from a behavioral neuroscience grad student in Missouri. "A blog about the biological basis for behavior, and how changes to biology effect changes in behavior." In some of the first posts, he talks about statistical analysis software, comparing the strengths of SPSS to the open source R. Another topic is the neurobiology of memory in aging...

...which the second new blogger is expert in. Dr. Michael Merzenich has begun blogging on the site of his brain fitness start-up PositScience (I hear they're getting a lot of resumes due to the current American science research funding climate). On The Brain keeps focus on three areas: providing a "no spin zone" look at brain fitness and neuroplasticity, the brain origins of neurological and psychiatric disorders and impairments including "chemobrain" cognitive impairment from cancer treatments, and child neurodevelopment. "Our main goal is to be positively HELPFUL," he says, and in his inaugural post invites the community to get involved.

My goal is to have something new to say about all three of these subjects at least 3 or 4 times each week, and to help guide you to other good information or advice that I become aware of. I'm counting on those of you who are "in the know" to help feed information to me to enrich this effort. Don't be shy about telling me when I'm wrong, or incomplete, or have just plain missed the point! And please don't be shy about telling me about important things that our special community -- the readers of this blog -- should be aware of!

It's great to see renowned scientists like Merzenich, and Phil Zimbardo at The Situationist, joining the blogosphere. But of course, students reviewing software are equally welcome.

And, you're welcome. Looking forward to more of your blogging. :)
