The Homunculus

steve_icon_medium.jpgThe Omnibrain is a psychology graduate student at an online university. He hopes that the three weeks and $29.95 that he is spending on his Ph.D. will get him a job at a Tier 1 research university. Do online universities have postdocs? Ok...just kidding, The Omnibrain is a real graduate student at a real school somewhere in the continental United States - or maybe Europe.

What's My Blog Rated? From Mingle2 - Online Dating

Via Bora of NC-17 rated A Blog Around The Clock. Omni Brain is G-rated? Maybe we need to spice things up...

Hmm, well, Vaughan at Mind Hacks has been writing about autoerotic sex deaths, most recently involving a man who constructed a complex full-body plastic bag. More links to studies (many include NSFW pictures, most require subscription but some older articles are free) below the cut:

Aqua-eroticum: an unusual autoerotic fatality in a lake involving a home-made diving apparatus
Unusual phenomenology of autoerotic fatalities (includes case report of a man with muscular dystrophy who had a nurse place him in a trash bin where he died untended)
Accidental electrocution during autoeroticism: a shocking case [great title]
Autoerotic fatalities with power hydraulics "One man developed a romantic attachment to a tractor, even giving it a name and writing poetry in its honor. He died accidentally while intentionally asphyxiating himself through suspension by the neck, leaving clues that he enjoyed perceptual distortions during asphyxiation."

Injuries that weren't fatal:
Urinary retention with ruptured fornix caused by a maggot. An autoerotic accident
Penile injury caused by a Moulinette: Result of autoerotic self-mutilation

I'm not judging the victims, y'know, whatever floats your boat (Rule 34). For the morbidly curious, though, these are interesting cases. Worthy of Warren Ellis (whose much-anticipated novel Crooked Little Finger will be out next month).

Apparently, my blog is PG-13 due to the occasional mentions of sex, drugs and death in that order (which in no way reflects my priorities in life).

Along similar lines, this is another fun test: see if your blog is banned in China. Mine, apparently, is.

And Steve, I too, *cannot wait* for Warren Ellis' novel.

Omni Brain is still rated G:

This rating was determined based on the presence of the following words:

* sex (2x)
* dangerous (1x)

Obviously, "autoerotic" is not one of their search terms.

This rating was determined based on the presence of the following words:

* death (4x)
* dangerous (3x)
* suicide (2x)
* dick (1x)

Oh. My. Nonexistent. Gawd.

The words "death, dangerous, suicide"?

The Salman Rushdie post accounts for all the death and suicide(the usual riots and burning of effigies in Pakistan, and the usual death threats; "the writer’s nightmare will not end until the moment of his death"; 2 commenters' "responsible for at least 50 to 60 deaths worldwide from murder and rioting"; the award of the knighthood excused suicide bombing; If honoring a brilliant writer sparks suicide bombings and riots) .

The sidebar and header account for the danger: Alexander Hamiliton (a more dangerous engine of arbitrary government), David Hume (endeavor the refutation of any hypothesis, by a pretence of its dangerous consequences to religion and morality), and Mark Twain (Only when a republic's life is in danger should a man uphold his government when it is in the wrong. There is no other time).

And "dick"? Philip K. Dick (Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.)
