Omni Brain

An exploration of the serious/fun/ridiculous - past/present/future of the brain and the science that loves it.

The Homunculus

steve_icon_medium.jpgThe Omnibrain is a psychology graduate student at an online university. He hopes that the three weeks and $29.95 that he is spending on his Ph.D. will get him a job at a Tier 1 research university. Do online universities have postdocs? Ok...just kidding, The Omnibrain is a real graduate student at a real school somewhere in the continental United States - or maybe Europe.

Category: Neuroart

Since you've all been clamouring to see it, here's my new tattoo, and a video clip of the work in progress. It's an intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cell, my favourite type of neuron. The artist was Gordon at Brain Drops, highly recommended. :) Enjoy your holidays!...

December 13 is my birthday! Yippee, you say, how old am I? Old enough to not say... I will shamelessly mention the Amazon wish list linked from my contact page, and remind you that Omni Brain has a tip jar in the sidebar (shared with Steve). But I'm not...

DonorsChoose Goal Met

Category: Charity

Omni Brain met its fundraising goal of $1000 for music education programs through DonorsChoose. Thank you to everyone who's donated. You rock! Now 30 kids will too. But it'd be okay, you know, permissible (haha) to exceed our goal if you'd still like to help a Lisa Simpson. A...

ACHOO

Mind Hacks recently held its first AAICS (Awkward Acronyms In Cognitive Science) competition, to find the most inventive and unwieldy brain-related acronyms. I submitted a few; there was Project CHOICES (Changing High-Risk AlcOhol Use and Increasing Contraception Effectiveness Study) [link], and ACTIVE (Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital...

Omni Brain now has a Facebook group. Join us! I'm amiss in reporting recent IRL social news. There was a lovely dinner with SciBling Bora Zivkovic (who's creating a new online community at PLoS) at the sustainable foods Italian restaurant Incanto, in San Francisco. Then in Vancouver, Bjoern Brembs was...
