The night of December 25, to which date the Nativity of Christ was ultimately assigned, was exactly that of the birth of the Persian savior Mithra, who, as an incarnation of eternal light, was born the night of the winter solstice (then dated December 25) at midnight, the instant of the turn of the year from increasing darkness to light.

He's usually such a pleasant fellow...

…but I guess everyone has their snapping point. Jaquandor doesn't usually snarl at people, but he's done a fine takedown of wingnut stupidity.

What tipped him over? Jonah Goldberg. I can't blame him—I studiously avoid NRO's corner because it reminds me too painfully of how idiotic some people can be. The NRO gang are just freepers with Buckleyesque pretensions.

Probably wouldn't have happened if I hadn't read that Orson Scott Card article a few days ago, and just taken a deep breath and let it go....

There is strength in anger. Use it!

Pointing out the stupidity of truly stupid people is rarely productive, primarily because they won't understand the demonstration of their inanity in the first place.

There may be strength in anger, but if that strength isn't used to silence or at least exclude the babblings of morons, it's wasted. Any population needs a filter to eliminate harmful variations. If you're not going to be that filter, or contribute to its construction, don't bother.

When you're over at Jaquandor's site you might want to read the touching story of Little Quinn if you haven't. You need to scroll way down and look for the links on the left.

*snortle* So, Caledonian, is mathematics still science for you?

Yeah, *snortle*. The story continues in the next post too.

And the arrogant 'we have a problem because I say so, contribute to the solution because I say so' attitude is ... an inanity I will filter out, not point out. :-)

Oh yes, at least until someone points out a flaw in the demonstration. So far there's been nothing but "it isn't, 'cause".

NRO to me means the National Reconnaissance Office, the joint CIA and US Air Force Agency which operates and interprets imagery from America's surveillance satellites. Who has appropriated their acronym?

Wow, what an idiotic exchange between Derbyshire and Goldberg. Derbyshire has in the past taken a strong stance against intelligent [sic] design, and rightly championed evolution as an elegant theory. Too bad he couldn't continue that line of thinking. I do think it's valuable to point out the stupidity of stupid people, at least so that people like me can put their occasional eloquence in perspective.

I think he's on the right track with the lard. But rather than smear yourself with it what you really need to do is pour it in the ice cold water where it will solidify into a floating lard island. Then all you need to do is fashion a sail from Kate Windslet's dress and you'll be in New York harbour before the Carpathia.

But I'm surprised he didn't think of using a bathtub with the plug in as a lifeboat. Personally I would have stuck two bathtubs together with lard to make a submarine. No wait, actually I would have used my Spiderman powers to web onto the iceberg and use that as a life raft. Didn't think of that, did you Jonah?

JCR,

NRO = National Review Online, the online presence of the far right magazine of the same name.

Why didn't they shine the Batlight and help would be on the way?
