Watch out for possible commenting glitches

Category: Weblogs
Posted on: July 6, 2006 3:27 PM, by PZ Myers

There have been these annoying glitches in TypeKey comment management in the past, and the source of the problem is inconsistency in how the different science blogs require valid email addresses in your comments. We're about to enforce a uniform standard across all the science blogs—you will all be required to use a valid email address, although I don't think it will be displayed—and that might cause a few hiccups here, at first. Give it a chance and it will all shake out, I hope.

Speaking of problems with the site, i get emails notifying me of new posts before they show up on the site (5-60sec) its irritating to click on a link and for the page not to exist yet. Wouldnt it be better to create the page first before letting everyone know?

I am having problems with Safari. Even after removing all relavent cookies, upon clicking "Sing in," I keep getting a dead end page with this error message:
"Comment Submission Error
Your comment submission failed for the following reasons:
This weblog requires commenters to pass an email address. If you'd like to do so you may log in again, and give the authentication service permission to pass your email address." with no links to re-sign in. I do not get the page that allows me to set the prefference for email address as I did here with Firefox.

Looks like the same old cookie problem again. (Rather than bother clearing the scienceblog cookies in Firefox to try to get it to work, I posted this from Explorer, which I almost never use, and never previously for this blog.)

I couldn't get it to work from Firefox at all, even after clearing cookies and cache. I'm posting this from IE, and I got the "permission to share e-mail address" prompt that didn't come up in Firefox.

I didn't get a prompt to sing, either. Is there a special song?

I closed IE and came back to FF, did a refresh, and I got the
"share e-mail address" prompt. I also sang the first stanza of "Onward Christian Soldiers" in a very loud voice, so maybe that was it.

Cute. So, I am not a perfect typist.

Firefox is working fine for me. I refuse to use IE since the version for the Mac is so old. I am getting the same issues with Safari as others seem to be with Firefox.

I had to do the same thing James did (go into IE, enter typekey, then refresh in firefox). Typekey wouldn't give me the allow password though firefox initially. Hope they work out the bugs.. I don't want to have to do this every time. (BTW...I was signing "Miracles" hoping this would work...

On a slight side note... The email I sent you PZ, about the goofy thinking of some nuts on a furry forum.. Turns out that it gets cross posted to "more" than just the two mentioned. I accidentally landed, via one of the participants in a different thread, in a furry "spirituality" forum....

I also just got handed, as an explanation, for why nothing I said was meaningful and I should shut up, the old, "We are effected by having animal souls born in human bodies, but being a spiritual issue, its both intangible and untestable." Not sure which is creepier, having the same conversation I see on here by creationists and religion advocates repeated over there, or that its being repeated by people that would prefer to have muzzles, pointed ears, fur and tails, rather than be "human"...

The real problem, imho, with respect to human chimera isn't what some research nut might do, but that one of these clowns might re-write their kids DNA, because the local tarot card reader tells them that he/she will be born with the soul of a sewer rat, and they leap to the conclusion that the kid would feel better in a more sewer rat like body. lol

Well, there were glitches before anyway. Previously Pharyngula works fine after I sign in, but for Dr. Charles and a couple of others, I had to sign *out* before I could comment. Haven't had any problems today, but I haven't been leaving too many SB comments.

I had to do the same as a lot of other people - Firefox wasn't logging me in at all, so I had to use IE (*spit*) and then refresh the page in Firefox to get the email vaildation screen.

Seems to be fixed now- the "share email address" dialog is now coming up in Firefox for me, which lets me log in successfully.

Well, I wasn't able to post yesterday on Firefox on Windows. Now I'm back home and using Safari on OS X. Whether it was the fix or the change in platform, now I can post again. Yay!

(I always find it incredible that people manage to make unworking pages ...)
