The level of awe that you get by contemplating the modern scientific view of the universe: deep time (by which I mean geological time), deep space, and what you could call deep complexity, living things….. that level of awe is just orders of magnitude greater and more awe-inspiring than the sort of pokey medieval world-view which the church still actually has. I mean, they sort of pay lip-service to the scientific world-view, but if you listen to what they say on Thought For The Day [a religious program on BBC Radio] and things like that, it is medieval. It's a small world, a small universe, with the sky up there, very little advance since that time. So I yield to nobody in my awe for the universe and for life, but I also have a deep desire to understand it, in terms of what makes it work, what makes it tick, and not to take refuge in spurious non-explanations like "I just believe it because I believe it," that sort of thing.

[Richard Dawkins, interview with Douglas Adams]

Nice counteroffer

Category: Creationism
Posted on: December 18, 2006 9:04 PM, by PZ Myers

After Dembski sent out that request for more contributions to his petty flash animation, Ken Miller offers him more than he asked for: a nice assortment of the most embarrasssing moments for the creationists at the Dover trial. No response from Dembski yet; aren't you all looking forward to it?

` Is it sad that such people as ourselves consider this to be comedy?

The "galloping horses" was a nice touch.

Actually, Dembski's response was more or less, "get your own Flash animator".

"It's great to see what sort of research the Intelligent Design movement is up to these days!"

The killer sentence.

The killer sentence.

It's also great to see what sort of revolutionary, paradigm-shattering ideas Dembski is proposing in information theory.

Don't worry, they're a` comin'! You just wait apiece.

One gets the sense that even the cheerful Ken Miller is completely fed up with the likes of Dembski. I've seen Dr. Miller publicly in a variety of forums, including an on-line debate where he pretty much trashed Philip Johnson, but I've never seen an extended burst of sarcasm like this.

Good. Dembski's actions need to be mocked, and by as many as possible. On that note, Torjborn Larsson has a bon mot on the PT thread that should be savored....SH

Yeah! I was.

But all Dembski did was empty his wallet of his letters to/from Dawkins all over the UD floor. (Not that I object; fine idea to have Dawkins take him down on his own blog!)

I suggested this at PT too: someone needs to add the flash animation fiasco to Dembski's wikipedia entry. That ought to get DaveScot steaming. But still, I think it is valuable info for the entry.

Something that just came to mind: Have a video of some Discovery Institute headquarters, talking about the breathtaking research going on inside. "Let's head into their lab" and it's Dembski and Behe done Terrance and Philip Style, making fart jokes while making their own fart-filled animation.

Getting us all to fit into that post office box sounds more like a job for quantum physics to me!

Kristine:

If someone had told me that you were 'making whoopee' this is *not* what I would've pictured. I'm afraid that from now on whenever I think of Dembski I'm going to have to suppress a giggle. Tsk tsk. You're gonna get coal in your stocking, young lady. Mississipian coal, with lots of fern impressions.

Seriously, though, well done. As I said, Bill D needs to be mocked by as many as possible....SH

Hey, I didn't make the thing! ;-)

So far I've already gotten three blog-presents from Santa--the dashing Dawkins at UD, the stickers falling down in Cobb County, and now, the cute little Dembski cushion (can it double as a pot-holder?). Christmas is looking good so far!
