In physics terms, creation ex nihilo appears to violate both the first and second laws of thermodynamics. The first law of thermodynamics is equivalent to the principle of conservation of energy: the total energy of a closed system is constant; any energy change must be compensated by a corresponding inflow or outflow from the system. Einstein showed that mass and energy are equivalent, by E = mc^2. So, if the universe started from 'nothing,' energy conservation would seem to have been violated by the creation of matter. Some energy from outside is apparently required.

Pharyngula has fallen behind by almost 200 votes. Wouldn't you know that the phylum of the rats would be up to dirty tricks, though? One of their own has confessed to cheating, and tried to spread the information. Phil, to his credit, has suppressed the recipe, but it tells you all you need to know about his unscrupulous minions.

Vote for Pharyngula (and remember, you can vote every day!). Unless you really want to read my bitter, whiny, accusatory, and self-pitying concession speech.

You don't want to see me looking like that, do you? I don't even know if I can fit into my plaid pinafore anymore.

Maybe he figured out how to bypass the lockout. It isn't that hard, you know. And you can keep the totals close to avoid arousing suspicion!

I note that the home-schoolers have just taken the lead from Michael Bérubé. Voting for him seems like a far more urgent endeavor than between the philosophically indistinguishable PP and PM.

Wow, lay off the kid.

I loathe Santorum, but the girl is 8 years old and her father, for all his faults, is a vital and central part of her world.

Maybe someday she'll figure out that her father is a dipshit, maybe not, but judge her when she's old enough to make that decision, not now.

My wee Fiona thinks I'm the greatest daddy in the world, and chances are I'm not, but I'd appreciate everyone waiting until she can decide such things for herself before being mocked for being my biggest fan.

As much as I love to come here for the science, at times the senseless partisanship leaves me cold.

I agree with Andy. Making fun of 8-year olds in this way is rather insipid. No matter whom her father is. That kid really exists, and her schoolmates will be making fun of her. (Of course her father was the one who took the risk and exposed her --as most politicians do-- to the press and the public.)

We need tougher penalities for people like his daughter who do not heed the warnings and choose to wear the pinafore and hold the dolly, thinking they can ride out the criticism.

They have to understand that there are consequences for dressing like an idiot in public.

I felt terrible for that little girl, personally. Maybe she truly felt bad for her father, but I have the sneaking suspicion that she was dreading The Belt that night, in a post-loss rampage.

Dunno what's up with the bug-eyed son on the far right, though. Is he fair game?

Just want to make a few points:

* Vote totals are not final until certified.
* Vote totals are subject to periodic correction for identified cheating.
* Cheaters will be banned from the site.

So bypassing the lockout doesn't do much other than prevent you from voting again. It will be a fair win or a fair loss.
