How can they have a respectable show trial if the defendant keeps defending himself so well? This is a classic and irrefutable response.

indeed, but special pleading on the part of the defendant, regardless of how eloquent, rarely influences judges.

As the Soviets taught us, it wouldn't be a real show trial unless a founding member of the party was a defendant.
