W. V. O. Quine has been one of the most ruthless of recent appliers of this principle [Ockham's razor.] I recall an exchange in print (a fest-schrift, around 1980) where someone quoted Shakespeare's "There are more things on heaven and earth, than are dreamed of in your philosophy" at Quine. Quine responded something like, "Possibly, but my concern is that there not be more things in my philosophy than are in heaven and earth.

Monty, Richard, Ted, and a dead parrot

Category: Humor

As soon as Richard Dawkins opens his mouth, I started laughing…and when Ted Haggard starts singing, well, I lost it. You must watch this video!

Ted Haggard singing "The Lumberjack Song" is priceless!

And while Richard Dawkins maintained a sort of steely civility when talking to Haggard, I did get the impression that, barely contained underneath, there was the sort of quivering outrage that Cleese does so well.

Excellent.
Theres another parody of that meeting floating about here.

Where is the original footage from?

Oi, the parrot-counter-knocking noise at the begining woke up my dog, who was dozing behind my chair, and set her to 'berzerk' mode.

Fortunately, my coffee cup was empty (how often do I think that). I guess I'll have to check it out later then.

I read your lead and put my coffee down first before playing the vid; glad I did.
Thanks for the silliness!

I haven't laughed that hard in ages. Simple idea, but the editing was done really well.

That was brilliant. Good old Monty Python. And the lumberjack song was so apt for Ted Haggard.

Marvelous, simply brilliant.
I was quite surprised to see real talent in Haggard, his Shopkeeper/Michael Palin act was pretty good... but, actually, he is pretty good at making me laugh anyway (or cringe, at times).

That was brilliant... in so many ways.

Maybe I'll see if playing the Monty Python sketch audio over the Wizard of Oz movie might have the same effect. Or maybe play the Wizard of Oz movie over the Dawkins/Haggard segment, or Darkside of the Moon...or...

The possibilities are endless!

Now that is what I call appropriate use of technology. The Lumberjack song: Excellent.

For the one who wondered: The footage was from "Root of All Evil?", a documentary by Dawkins in two parts. I think that was from part 2, though I am not certain.

It's from Part I of 'Root of All Evil', somewhere towards the end of the first half hour, I recall.

Now THAT is funny.

For those of you who haven't seen it, this is the original parrot scene http://www.bestofgooglevideo.com/video.php?video=46

The original scetch ended in words:

"Owner(Haggard in video): (quietly) D'you.... d'you want to come back to my place?
Mr. Praline(Dawkins): (looks around) Yeah, all right, sure."

That would be funnier ending... When we remember which kind of "moral character" Haggard is!

Youtube has the original conversation between Dawkins and Haggard here:

Clicky!

I must say that parroting Michael Palin is ultimately less embarrassing for Haggard.

Pedant's corner: it's not even the original Dead Parrot Sketch.

Mind you, the original wouldn't work so well: they don't dance like that in Bolton (or Ipswich).

Dammit, it's too late for me to be laughing this hard. Now I'll never get to sleep. That's what I get, I guess...

This fits in really well with the Monty Python does ID sketch from January, 2006, Chez Watt.
