Some heathens whose Idol was greatly weatherworn threw it into a river, and erecting a new one, engaged in public worship at its base.
'What is this all about?' inquired the New Idol.

'Father of Joy and Gore,' said the High Priest, 'be patient and I will instruct you in the doctrines and rites of our holy religion.'
A year later, after a course of study in theology, the Idol asked to be thrown into the river, declaring himself an atheist.
'Do not let that trouble you,' said the High Priest — 'so am I.'

Octopus Dumpling Soda

This product is apparently a joke, but as long as Coke is constantly tinkering with their formula, I don't see why dumping in an extract of fried mollusc shouldn't be within the realm of possibility.

I wonder if it's like a cold soup.

You had to tell me that was a joke, or I would have thought otherwise. I go to asian markets, you see. Sometimes I need things that just aren't stocked at the Hy-Vee (that, by the way, means: "Anything that isn't hamburger, pork, or corn").

I can never tell if the "Squid Flavored Ass Chips" are really "Squid Flavored Ass Chips" or a translation gaffe.

I wouldn't put anything past the folks that brought us roasted silkworm pupae.

Just the other day I saw a bottle of clam extract on the shelf in Safeway.

Of course, that's not at all odd, in the city that invented the Caesar. Now you can buy your own tomato juice to mix, and don't have to buy Mott's Clamato...

Only if they want to kill people like me, who are prohibitted from eating clams and oysters by our immune systems.

The lettering announces "Takoyaki soda", takoyaki being the doughy balls pictured on the bottom of the can. Take eggs and flour and mix, stir into takoyaki tray and heat, add chunk of tako--octopus to the uninitiated--and continue to heat, deftly turning the mix until browned on the outside, then season. A gourmet delight of Japan's Osaka, loved by my wife and son. Just stodge to me, though I do like a good chunk of octopus.

Maybe the drink at the following link will suit you.

There must be tentacle products somewhere on the site.

Makes you think it's a joke? Somewhere in the closet I still have a can of "Water Salad" I picked up from a vending machine at Shin-Osaka station, so I find this perfectly believable.

If you hadn't told me it was a joke I would have believed it. In Japan I drank Calpis (try saying that quickly) Procari Sweat and, I'm not very good at translating, but apparently one drink was called, "Sorry." Nice of them to appologize in advance like that before you drank it.

Trust me, I'm also exiled in Japan and this stuff is for real.

I do love the way that the octopus on the cover is saying 'umai' (delicious). Eat me I'm yummy!! Octopuses over here are kinda like the cow in the restaurant at the end of the universe, if you know what i mean....

I certainly wouldn't put it past the Japanese to do something like this (they have milk beer, after all!), but I got the impression from Nana Yanagisawa that this particular product was a stage prop.

Ventor Brewery on the Isle Of Wight make an Oyster Stout which contains real oysters. (Most other Oyster Stouts don't- they merely go well with seafood.)

I have nothing against fried octopus, but putting it in a can?

Blech. I'd rather it on a small plate next to some hot dipping sauce or something.
