A universe with a God would like quite different from a universe without one. A physics, a biology where there is a God is bound to look different. So the most basic claims of religion are scientific. Religion is a scientific theory. "

The trouble is that God in this sophisticated, physicist's sense bears no resemblance to the God of the Bible or any other religion. If a physicist says God is another name for Planck's constant, or God is a superstring, we should take it as a picturesque metaphorical way of saying that the nature of superstrings or the value of Planck's constant is a profound mystery. It has obviously not the smallest connection with a being capable of forgiving sins, a being who might listen to prayers, who cares about whether or not the Sabbath begins at 5pm or 6pm, whether you wear a veil or have a bit of arm showing; and no connection whatever with a being capable of imposing a death penalty on His son to expiate the sins of the world before and after he was born.

Cline at UMTC

Category: GodlessnessLocal
Posted on: February 24, 2008 7:57 PM, by PZ Myers

Hey, Minneapolitans — Campus Atheists, Skeptics, and Humanists have two big events coming up soon. This week, it's pizza and bowling on the UMTC campus. I'm probably not going to be able to make that one, but the week after, on 6 March, Austin Cline will be speaking on critical thinking and skepticism, and I may be able to get into town for that one. Let's all go say hello to another godless blogger!

I would love to be there, but it would cost too many coconuts.

Hmmm, sounds like fun. I didn't see a time posted either here or on the CASH site...am I going to need a miracle to cure my blindness in order to participate?

What? I've been sighted...Thursday at 8 am? That's AM? Ahhh, then again if that is correct I'm not too excited at my prospect of making it.

I really like the website for the "best damned group on campus" (CASH). Too bad I'm not a student at UMTC.

I was subscribed to Austin Cline's Atheism Guide for months before I really even knew what a blog was. He was a large part of the reason I decided to start my own. I, unfortunately, don't live anywhere near Minneapolis...

I've been on the About Atheism forums for years now. Austin's blog/information are fantastic... do wish I lived near by. There should be some stuff in California as the Godless are quite plentiful here, but without the rather constant persecution since childhood nothing about atheism makes it seem remarkably rebellious.

Thanks PZ for the update...I might be able to make it at the later time.
