Anyone dig Apocalyptica? They will be in Minneapolis April 26th. For those not in the know, they are a quartet of celloists that started out covering Metallica songs on the cellos (truly amazing stuff) and later covered other great metal bands on their cellos. They now just create tons of their own material.
I vote this a place for MN Pharyngula people to show up. They have the option of balcony seating with a meal or general admission. I wanted to do balcony seating, but my friends are all general admission, so that is where I will be.

I'm in, but you are stuck organizing. ;^)

Jealousy or envy? At first, I thought you might have misused the word as so many do, but I realized it is possible that you are just trying to keep your acolytes all to yourself. Our PZ is a jealous PZ ...
Posted by: The Kenosha Kid | March 16, 2008 12:12 PM
You want jealousy? I saw Dawkins speak in NYC last night. In your face!
Posted by: Sam | March 16, 2008 12:21 PM
Ooooooooh! I'm jealous of that Kenosha Kid. But fortunately I just have to wait until the American Atheist Convention in Minneapolis next week to hear him speak.

What's the word on a Pharyngala in Minneapolis next weekend?
Posted by: Nathan | March 16, 2008 1:47 PM
I'm game for a Minneapolis Pharyngala meet-up!
I'm voting for Town Hall Brewery.

Any Pharynguloids in South Korea?
Post here and we can meet!

The jealousy burns over here to PZ, both because London is too far and because its been too long since I was last in a pub....
Posted by: Kseniya | March 16, 2008 2:37 PM
Somehow, this reminds me of a old Ukrainian saying:
"The church is close, but the way is icy. The tavern is far, but I will go carefully."
Posted by: denise | March 16, 2008 2:37 PM
ok, so I'm jealous, too.
Any Pharynguloids in the Pittsburgh / SW PA area?
Posted by: Mike from Ottawa | March 16, 2008 2:39 PM
Isn't every day PharynguFest at your house?
I'm not jealous because I got to see Neil Shubin speak at the National Library and Archives here yesterday. Excellent speaker. Also fun to see the cast and model of Tiktaalik up close. I'm looking forward to seeing the real things when turn up at the Museum of Nature here when Shubin's lab has finished their work on them.

Town Hall Brewery for Saturday Night? If we organize it will they come?
Saturday Night the American Atheist Conference will break out for a dinner, and I am not planning on attending. So, if enough people are game for Town Hall Brewery (homebrewed ales, beers and porters are very tasty there) I can advertise a Pharyngufest through facebook and try to get some people there.
Town Hall can fill up on a Saturday night pretty quickly in the Pub, so perhaps if we can set aside a few tables in the restaurant we could accommodate more people.

re: #1, #3
You're almost making me homesick. I'd like to be there but I'm stuck in northern Illinois now.
Speaking of which, I'm about halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee. Anyone nearby?
Posted by: LisaJ | March 16, 2008 4:52 PM
Oh, here's some more jealousy for ya's all. I saw Neil Shubin speak in Ottawa yesterday afternoon, to a little group of 25 or so of us. I also met him and had a little chat, and he signed my book :) Oh yeah.
Posted by: PZ Myers | March 16, 2008 5:19 PM
Unfortunately, I already have a dinner engagement for Saturday night...if it was later, I could stop by. Is the Town Hall Brewery near the hotel?
Posted by: Avekid | March 16, 2008 5:44 PM
OT, but still interesting:
Anyone heard about the fruit flies, therefore free will thing?

I don't know how this stuff gets through peer review.

If y'all are dowtown, just take over First Avenue. Sure, the Purple One doesn't just jam there anymore, but it could be a good time.
Posted by: Tiny Hermaphrodite | March 16, 2008 6:16 PM
See, these kind of meetings prove, like totally, that the New Atheists are a dangerous, fanatical cult which outreligions normal religon.
Posted by: Nevyn | March 16, 2008 6:29 PM
I'm in Chicago. I'm willing to meet people. (I'm also more interesting than previous sentences may indicate . . .)
Posted by: MAJeff, OM | March 16, 2008 6:32 PM
Nevyn,
Check out skepchick.org or The Friendly Atheist. They're organizing a Chicagoland get-together.
Posted by: extatyzoma | March 16, 2008 6:35 PM
jealous of those English pints!!

I will be at the American Atheists Conference. Click on my name and send a message to my heathen-ass on that dirty site.
Posted by: NYCatheist | March 16, 2008 8:26 PM
Any Pharyngula fans in NYC? You should come out for our friday night Drinking With Atheists. (DWA)
I saw Dawkins too these past two days in NYC. I wrote about it on my rarely updated blog.
Posted by: Nathan | March 16, 2008 9:08 PM
PZ, Town Hall Brewery is a hop, skip, and a jump from the U of MN Twin Cities on the West Bank on Washington Ave.
I think we should organize it, I can probably convince my godless lady friend to come too.
Posted by: JLS | March 16, 2008 9:08 PM
Please dont laugh, buy any Pharyngula fans in Fort Wayne Indiana?? It's possible. Right?
Posted by: Nathan | March 16, 2008 9:10 PM
Maybe we can get Greg Layden to make a rare appearance as well?
Posted by: Sam | March 16, 2008 9:31 PM
Yes. We definitely should try to get Greg Laden to make an appearance. I wonder if he is as funny in person as on the blog.

Count in two more for Saturday night. Although if PZ is jonesing for an Old World pub, the Local is a better choice. It's also just a few blocks down Nicollet Mall from the Marriott. Not that Town Hall isn't a great place; it's just a half-hour walk from the conference. Cheap cab, though. Their regular beers are decent, and all their special brews I've had were lovely. They also have a nice selection of imports and food that's a notch or two above standard pub fare.
MAJeff, one goes to First Ave neither to eat nor to talk. One goes for the music, to watch the dust dripping from the ceiling, and to test one's sobriety by navigating the bathroom stalls. It's one of my favorite places, but it's really not civilized. It's never gotten over being a Greyhound depot.
Posted by: Nathan | March 16, 2008 10:53 PM
Good point, The Local is more accessible to PZ, if we can schmooze him enough to show up, that is...

Never been to First Ave. Tended to spend my time around the corner at The Saloon.
Posted by: PZ Myers | March 16, 2008 11:15 PM
I'd be happy to show up. It's just that, well, I'm joining the Dawkins foundation people for dinner that night first...I could promise to stroll over as soon as that is done, though, and closer is better. The Local sounds like a good idea; I might also be able to talk some of the RDF gang into joining us, too.

Hey youse crazy Pharynguloids! Any of you in Winnipeg, home of best specialty beers and pretty good foods of all denominations? At least two old style English pubs, (except for the one that's flooded at the moment...oops)
If PZ is ever free, he could nip up here and get fed local beer till he begins to yodel in klingon.

I haven't been to The Saloon, but their menu says they serve tater tots. Definitely more civilized than First Ave.

They serve tater tots? Hell, when did they get a menu?!?!?!
I just went for beer and boys.
Posted by: Mike Haubrich, FCD | March 17, 2008 2:03 AM
Okay, I am swayed towards The Local due to logistics and access to the American Atheists conference attendees. I have never been there, but I have been to the one in St. Paul and I was satisfied.
(psst, PZ, at the dinner with RDF could you put in a good word for the Beagle Project? Karen James has told me she hasn't had much luck getting grant money from them.)
Posted by: Bride of Shrek | March 17, 2008 7:49 AM
As a non-USAian Pharyngulite I had to Google "Tater Tots" to see what you were talking about. I wish I hadn't. I'm simultaneously amazed, disgusted and yet, strangely aroused, that you people would put those things into your body.
Posted by: Stephanie Z | March 17, 2008 9:46 AM
Bride, I do what I can. Tater tots are one of my guilty pleasures. Speaking of which: MAJeff, are there any other Minneapolis memories I can warp for you?
Actually, if it's any consolation, I don't think the bachelorette parties have taken over The Saloon yet. I'm pretty sure they still flood the 90's.
Posted by: Carlie | March 17, 2008 9:59 AM
They're hash browns in nugget form! What's not to like?
Bride of Shrek - for a full cultural experience of Tater Tots, watch Napoleon Dynamite. :)
