It was amazing, this mystic business. You tell them a lie, and then when you don't need it any more you tell them another lie and tell them they're progressing along the road to wisdom. Then instead of laughing they follow you even more, hoping that at the heart of all the lies they'll find the truth. And bit by bit they accept the unacceptable.

Party like it's 1,000,000 comments

Category: Entertainment

Even though it's actually 1,037,696 comments on ScienceBlogs right now, and they're a little slow, the New Yorkers are finally getting it together for a big shindig in the Big Apple. If you're somewhere near Manhattan on 7 October, stop by and party with the nerds.

Well I'll be somewhere near, but doubt I will brave the necessary LIRR/subway trip on a Tuesday night. Have fun, nerds!

yeesh, looks a bit sketchy there (I love streetview). But perhaps I can go. How fast does a 600 dollar bar tab disappear? Will you be joining the festivities PZ?

Well, there must be a Gawd... and He politely loathes me. I've got a bunch of family coming into town on the 7th. That bastard, Gawd, never let's me go to parties.

Weird, I actually am going to be in NY this weekend - but we're going to be camping and spending time in Mountainville

I can't make it to the shindig but I think I might call my next album "party with the nerds."

Have fun, New Yorkers. I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray.

I'll be there! Yay!

Also, can I suggest a poll to crash?

??? The Official Commentometer on my display reads 1,019,360 - are there another stealth 26K comments available only to the Inside Traders?

Maria - I threw a hundred or so votes at it to help out.

Maria @#10,

I voted "No", of course, but the number of "Yes" votes is truly amazing.

Maybe you should aim for having 1 Megacomment, like 1 Megabyte - 2^20 comments rather than 10^6. That way the timing is about right, you can aim for 1048576 comments on the 7th.

Arguably, that would be a mebicomment rather than a megacomment depending on whether you value standards or tradition. I know they sound icky, but I like the IEC binary versions, so I've started to use MiB, GiB, etc. in writing, but say "megabyte" rather than "mebibyte". I hope they catch on.

Just out of curiosity; was the name of the millionth poster listed anywhere? I assume s/he lives in or near NY, since that's where the party is. And--alas--I live too far away :(
