Random Quote

If anything is unconstitutional, it is government encouragement to pray in the public schools. Moreover, the proposed constitutional amendment to allow voluntary prayer is offensive on two counts. First, it violates explicitly the intended secular base of the Constitution. And far worse, it encourages the political use of religion in a way that allows elected officials to evade their real responsibilities and to claim for themselves a moral high ground that they too often have done nothing to earn.

Isaac Kramnick and R. Laurence Moore, The Godless Constitution: The Case Against Religious Correctness (New York: W.W. Norton, 1996), p. 165.

PZ, why do you ask questions you know the answer to? Clearly it's been way too long since your last post about cephalopod sex. People are going into withdrawal. You can expect exponential growth in traffic unless you satiate your audience.

I'm nearly at my one-year anniversary of coming here. Interestingly enough, it was the random reading of an article about how Dawkins got into the screening of Expelled Excrement and you didn't that brought me here in the first place.

Crackergate, however, is what really sucked me in. That was just too much fun; now SIWOTI has me addicted - as the God, Abortionist thread illustrates.

Not to long ago you posted a video of a women being interviewed at the discover institute and she was a wack job, well I watched it with my 16 year old son (he is already more smart then I) and he thought it was SO FUNNY! We laughed about it together.

I almost never comment but stop by routinely. I used to be on the Institute for Creation Research mailing list just for the fun of it back in the 80's. It constantly blows me away that anyone still has to battle these people. This whole thing should have been a done deal decades ago. In fact I'm so much of the mind "been there done that" that the topic doesn't interest me at all anymore. But I guess someone needs to fight the good fight, and I'm glad there are fresh hearts and minds ready to do it.

Two fellow postdocs from our lab saw your closing address at the IEDG conference in Berkeley last year (didn't go myself, the boss and I got to go to Ghent, which is apparently in Belgium, for EED instead) and returned with massive big-ups for the fighting of the good fight etc. As one of aforesaid postdocs is my wife I'm contractually obliged to pay some form of attention to her findings.

@17: You mean the 'lies' responsible for medical breakthroughs as well as breakthroughs in the understanding of our common origins?

Hmm, I wonder how many other lies have aided humanity? Oh, like how Galileo's lies about a heliocentric solar system allowed us to send men to the moon and probes to the other planets?

2296911 visits in 31 days equals 74093 visits per day,3087 per hour, and 51 visits to Pharyngula per minute.

Thats more views than CSI or Simpsons gets on Australian TV in a month,I would guess.

It ain't so much you, Myers, as the freaks who daily post essays in the comments on whom you - OK, we - bestow Mollies. Other sites can be as entertaining, like Pandagon, Slactivist, Crooked Timber and Obsidian Wings, and a few commenters appear in multiple venues. One Molly is elsewhere God of Biscuits, for example.

It's a community, and we enjoy each other's presence. Thank you, and thank you all, for this very enjoyable place.

I "converted" away from a belief in "biblical creation" in my teen years (late '70's), and actually wrote a letter in 1981 to an organization that promoted their creation science (the ICR??), and I attempted to be both critical and conciliatory.

(the letter was a composition class assignment as a Penn State freshman (Biology major)... got an A+)

long time lurker, first time poster (if I remember correctly).

Like others I first became aware of Pharyngula during the "Expelled" nonsense last year (through Skepticality I think).

This site is now my first check with reality each morning. I am enthralled and challenged by the complexity of the science, incensed by the apologists for religous dogma but saddened by the ignorance of some "believers". Most of all I am inspired by the work being done by PZ and the other advocates of the "reality based community".

I come here because it keeps me from doing the boring work I should be working on right now!

I also enjoy the multitude of intelligent people as opposed to the otherwise borderline retards I deal with elsewhere. Even where I work, someone was claiming to have the ability to accurately predict the gender outcome of a pregnancy and tried to back up her ability by telling personal anecdotes... "I just can't tell with you, but I knew why my child was going to be and what my cousin's was..."

It makes me cringe when people talk like that!

Also, professorYackle, as a fellow UF fan, what d'you think of the threaded comments there? PZ was thinking of doing that here but the outcry made crackergate look like a tea party (no, it didn't).

#80

It's because we CATHOLICS are looking for a good, hard, steamy, session of tasty OFFENCE. Nothing tickles those anger buds like a good cracker defiling.

I mean, that whole thing with Obama stealing unborn babies to butcher them for stem cells to sling to his Liberal Nazi Scientists (you'd be surprised at how close those Liberal attitudes can bring you to Nazi needs) to make evil frankenstein evolution clones which will try to make everyone gay through Stem Cell assaults - that gave us a nice red thrill...

But PZ Myers can always be relied on for a good cracker-snuff movie...Oh...Oh...OHHHHH!!!! I just wet my angry letter writing campaign kit. Excuse me.

I come around for the occasional sight of Nemo appealing to authority.

"Cold Fusion"? It might be, it might not be. Last I heard nobody was really sure. Thing is, you set the equipment up just right and apply voltage, you get something to looks to some like fusion.

Thing is, while you do get more energy out than you put in -like with nukes etc., you don't get all that much more energy. May even be an artifact of the available measuring devices, falling within the margin of error.

Additional for Nemo: They have found actual rocks from outer space crashing into the Earth. Which can mean only one thing, God's a slob.

#86

I lurk, because I am a /b/tard. I feel like if I commented, any chan-refrences will either be misunderstood or offensive. I really love your blog, though, and I read every post, and even most of the comments. You attracted a smart crowd, and I find that even if I wanted to comment, somebody already said what I wanted to say.

I look up to you. I have just started college, and I plan on getting some sort of biology degree. I know this will sound cheesey, but somewhere in the back of mind, I want to help fight the good fight alongside you (and all the other major players, of course). But right now, I'm just some guy. I'll check back in with you in 8 years ;) Maybe longer, because I am in the Army. It is tough to be in the military AND be an atheist AND go to college. But you inspire me every day, in all three categories.

I get a lot of weird stares from other soldiers (pretty much a synonym for Xian), because they look over at my screen and see all the weird shit you post, and all the science, atheism, squids etc. mixed together. I don't bring it up, and neither do they (except for two chaplains who found me reading Ancestor's Tale, and your blog... but thats another story). I really love seeing that big red A every morning, it makes me feel like everything will turn out well in this culture war, as long as we keep up the fight. I'm getting it tattooed on my chest in a few weeks, it should go well with my new (custom) dog tags that I ordered. My old one's said NO-REL-PREF (no religious preference) which I found offensive, for obvious reasons. My new ones say FLY-SPA-MON :)

Thanks for everything.

tl;dr = I all but sucked PZ's dick, in a longish thank-you post.

The above must be true because I have lived long enough to see Pete Rooke post something sane. What next? Dogs and cats, living together, mass hysteria etc?

I am dropping my rss feed, going back to church, praying for forgiveness, and only reading Ken Ham, AiG, UD and other faith based blogs from now on, and moving, moving my family to Utah or Alaska or someplace safe. I've seen the light, the earth is really only 6000 years old if you only think about it hard enough, and all this sciencey stuff... I mean... why isn't there new life in my peanut butter and why is the banana perfectly shaped? What has science done for us anyway? Everybody wake up and smell the coffee!

The fact that we're worldwide is a warm comfort.

*shrug* To each his/her own, I guess. I have to admit being with Mario here; the "'nother stoopid religobot" posts are...not my favorites. Similarly, troll-stomping gets kinda boring (to me). 'Course it's PZ's blog and he can damn well post whatever the hell he wants. Personally, I showed up pre-ScienceBorglogs and stayed for the cool biology, but I do not presume to prescribe.

I will say that the (perceived) recent preponderance of religion-bashing has made me more reluctant than I used to be about recommending the blog to my (biology) students. I still do, but with ass-covering caveats aplenty.

I can certainly appreciate that view, but being in the midwest, I don't get many chances to vent about the religious stupidity all around me. This website keeps me sane by giving me an outlet to ridicule that which isn't socially acceptable to ridicule. I'm sure that there are plenty of science sites that don't mention religion at all; perhaps if your students are too sensitive to such issues, they should find them. Of course, I don't recall if your students are high school or college; I can imagine the level of concern would be greater given the former. No snark intended.

I can relate 100%; I did 6 years in Stillwater, Oklahoma. And I should clarify that I do enjoy many of the conversations that develop in comments under all kinds of posts. For me the big draw is all the commenters. Educated commenters, dumb-ass commenters, thoughtful, insightful commenters, honestly seeking commenters, tremulously rabid commenters, commenters from other planets, from higher (and lower) planes of existence, from small, rural churches and, of course, the comments that could only come from Invisible Supernatural Spooks possessing knowledge far beyond mere mortal understanding. I am cruelly kind

You have to be cruel to be kind... but only in the right measure. Overall, it's a very good sign!

BTW, all the cold fusion talk gave me a blast of nostalgia: Recall that there was a brief window of fascination and hope between the original stories about Pons' and Fleischmann's work and the emerging consensus regarding its bogosity. Scientists may have been skeptical from the get-go, but the positive articles in responsible media led many of us technically literate nonscientists to briefly hope CF might be real. Remember that CF came hot (you should excuse that word) on the heels of the breakthroughs in "high-temperature" superconductivity (of which I was more aware than many, owing to the fact that Paul Chu was working at my alma mater, U. of Houston). I recall thinking that if CF were true, the combination of cheap, safe, easy-to-build fusion "batteries" with practical lossless conductors would utterly change the world.

Then, of course, it all changed: P&F were debunked, and it became clear that however wonderful the supeconductivity work was, it wasn't going to lead to pervasive use of superconductors in everyday (room-temperature) devices anytime soon, and I was dumped out of my sci-fi Camelot daydreams right back into... 1989. [sigh]

Re the traffic bump, don't look at me: I check Pharyngula several times daily, but I've been doing that for years now, ever since I first discovered the place... so I can't be part of any delta.

#176

Posted by: Andy C | April 1, 2009 10:09 AM

I agree with Steve_C, it was Survivor Pharyngula... at least, that's what Google Trends seems to suggest.

@Eric,

With respect to the cold fusion question, your mention of the June time frame made me wonder if you were actually referring to the inertial confinement fusion device at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (which is definitely not cold fusion). If you want details I suggest you check out the National Ignition Facility website:

I managed to score a bottle last weekend — it was largely on the say-so of this august body that I was willing to pay as much for a single as you usually pay for a premium sixpack — and was rewarded with one of the most transcendently delightful taste experiences of my life. I've enjoyed other Dogfish Head products in the past, but this just made me purr. Thanks, Pharyngula!

Also, I went to my local brewers' shop last weekend and purchased homebrewing equipment, plus a Willamette hops rhizome, which I will probably plant this weekend or next. Yet another example of Pharyngula's power to motivate good in my life.

I can sublimate my rage at the bits of life which frustrate me, such as the global stupidity epidemic, by being as rude as I can to creationists.
I have learned so much from the other posters here.
Unfortunately I have also spent way too long waiting for the chance to say something snarky that it is like an addiction. And this is one addiction I find impossible to give up.
And PZ is one of my great heroes - his writing is brilliant, better and better. Can't wait for the book. How about simply publishing some of your best and worst

I've been reading for 2-3 years now. It is part of my morning wakeup ritual (check the headlines, weather, cartoons, and the blogs - usually Pharyngula and Bad Astronomy are #1 and #2). I don't comment much because I'm not sure I can quite keep up with the rough-and-tumble, and I run more along the lines of "be thought a fool than open my mouth and prove it". Besides, the exalted company who frequent this neighborhood and hang out on the street corners flicking their switchblades: Sastra, Cuttlefish, MAJeff (congrats, by the way, on passing your defense), the good Reverend Chimp, and many, many others, are far more articulate than I am; I have to conserve my best language skills for my math lectures. Normally I won't say much, or very often, but I'm always here enjoying both the science and the snark. Happy Monkey!

What kind of theology is that, anyways? His priest wants him to do what? Why again? Is it possible that priests can be even more ignorant of how the internet works than human sexuality? And Jesus does what with his cells?

Dumb. So dumb.

Reminds me of a question I once asked a Mormon: "If God really wants to save my soul, then why in hell would He--knowing that I don't brook arguments from stupid people well, send a moron like you to proselytise to me?"

It has been proven otherwise. Cold fusion has been replicated thousands of times by over 200 labs such as Los Alamos and BARC. You can read all about this at any university library. I have a collection of 1,200 peer-reviewed journal papers about cold fusion which I copied from the libraries at Los Alamos and Georgia Tech.

You will find a list of 3,500 papers on this subject, and 500 full text papers here:

http://lenr-canr.org/

Excess heat, tritium, neutrons and helium from cold fusion have been observed by thousands of researchers worldwide, often at high signal to noise ratios (thousands of times above background). There is not the slightest chance all of the observations are experimental error.

Whether the effect can be made into a practical source of energy remains to be seen.

I came here after reading the God Delusion. I'am neither a scientist or a student and I had no higher education; the reason I visit Pharyngula is simple: stimulating my brain, training reason, improve critical thinking, get arguments against religion.
BTW I'd like to ask for a favour for the non english native speakers as I am; You, the Pharyngulates very often use abreviations, references etc. which, as I think, for somebody who is not born and raised in the U,S are just not understandable. It would be very helpfull and kind if you could (at least from time to time)give some expalnation hint for those who are not so strong in the english language but interested in Pharyngula. I feel sometimes quite sad, when I read the comments to a post and just can't undestand it because of the above mentioned. Diccionaries are not always helpfull. So, sorry for my english and best regards to the Pharyngula community. Appreciate your work Prof. Meyers

Just to raise me up a crop of Dental Floss

I can sell uptown
By myself I wouldn't
Have no boss,
But I'd be raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Raisin' my lonely
Dental Floss
Well I just might grow me some bees
But I'd leave the sweet stuff
For somebody else...
but then, on the other hand
I'd Keep the wax N' melt it down
Pluck some Floss N' swish it aroun'
I'd have me a crop
An' it'd be on top

(that's why I'M movin' to Montana)

Movin' to Montana soon
Gonna be a Dental Floss tycoon
(yes I am)
Movin' to Montana soon
Gonna be a mennil-toss flykune
I'm pluckin' the ol' Dennil Floss
That's growin' on the prairie
Pluckin' the floss!
I plucked all day an' all nite an' all Afternoon...
I'm ridin' a small tiny hoss
(His name is MIGHTY LITTLE)
He's a good hoss
Even though He's a bit dinky to strap a big saddle or
Blanket on anyway
He's a bit dinky to strap a big saddle or
Blanket on anyway
Any way I'm pluckin' the ol' Dennil Floss
Even if you think it is a little silly, folks
I don't care if you think it's silly, folks
I don't care if you think it's silly, folks
I'm gonna find me a horse
Just about this big
An' ride him all along the border line
With a Pair of heavy-duty
Zircon-encrusted tweezers in my hand
Every other wrangler would say
I was mighty grand
By myself I wouldn't
Have no boss
But I'd be raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Well I might Ride along the border
With my tweezers gleamin'
In the moon-lighty night
And then I'd Get a cuppa cawfee
N' give my foot a push...
Just me 'n the pymgy pony
Over by the Dennil Floss Bush
And then I might just Jump back on
And ride Like a cowboy
Into the dawn to Montana
Movin' to Montana soon

I agree, to be absolute on the matter is foolish. Rather one should say that there is no evidence to support any particular deity. So without any reason to believe, then there should be the presumption of atheism. If you have any evidence to the contrary, please bring it and change the world with it.

Really PZ, if we can have a 1000+ posts on bacon, lesbians and oral sex in an open thread without a major flame war, there is only one conclusion why we all post here: TO HAVE FUN. Thank you for creating that environment.

I come so often having been inspired to solidify my views wrt theology. It was the sole scienceblog I had bookmarked. (Now it's Pharyngula and Good Math, Bad Math. Who knows what it'll be in the future.)

Furthermore, I agree with #158!

The invertebrate sex helps.

I haven't been able to read Dawkins yet. I frequently hit the library, wary as a student to dish out money for my own copy of TGD.

The comments tend to add to my vocabulary!

I lurked for the longest time (at least since mid2006), then in Jan '09 GMBM inspired me to sign up for that TypePad and now I use it everywhere I go in scienceblogs. I comment when I decide it's salient. (This decision may be questionable. As may the dates be.)

For the refreshment.

PZ's limitless charm and clarity, the nifty squid pix and fairly clever banter (even if it is considerably contaminated with wusses), among lots of other fascinating and often unpredictable tidbits go down like that first swallow of cold beer after a hard day.

Aaaaahhhhh.....

Thanks PZ!

I've been lurking about for approximately a year and eight months. I really do enjoy the articles you throw up here on your blog. The most enjoyable in my opinion are the ones in which you really slam religion. I didn't really find your blog until Phil Plait mentioned you a few times and I stopped being lazy and got myself over here. What's really enjoyable is just reading the comments, you got a lot of people here with good humor. Who knows, I might take the time and make a post or three in the future.

I'm late getting to this discussion. My day isn't complete unless I peek into Pharyngula. Your articles are interesting and keep me informed. It's like a continuing education for me. I like the lively discussions on religion and the light you shed on the rampant hypocrisy and stupidity that continues to thrive out there despite the presence of reason, and of course, I think you are just one hellava nice guy. - My only question is, Why would anyone live in Minnesota after Eugene?

PZ asked:

What did I do this time?

What didn't you do?!

Among other things:

- You hosted Survivor Pharyngula.
- You had open threads and let commentors run amok, hither and yon, and into space with Starbuck and Adama.
- You posted snail sex videos and photos.
- You bashed believers.
- You blasphemed.
- You were smart.
- You were snarky.
- You were sciencey.
- You got e-mails.
- You were accused of stalking and asked for camera compensation.
- You had commentors who were super-smart, knowledgeable, and witty.
- You had commentors who were stupid, deranged, and insipid.
- You roared rude things about the pope and his church.
- You noted nice things about Dawkins.
- You framed Nisbet.
- You ranted about politicians in Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, and Michigan.
- To took on some non-controversial topics like abortion, sexism, and Icelandic fairies.
- You reviewed Watchmen.
- You linked to a video about a talking alcoholic atheist dog.
- You featured photos of a frozen iceman.
- You sicced your minions on polls.
- You gave us Friday Cephalopods.
- You gave us Mary's Monday Metazoans.
- You celebrated MAJeff's Ph.D.
- You won an award.
- You had a birthday.
- You celebrated an anniversary.
- You wrecked your car.

Is there anything you won't do to keep us reading?

I got here from Nonprophets. Can you please say "asshat" a few times in every entry, since NP have slacked off?

"What did I do this time?"

Becoming humanist of the year, maybe?

I spaced when I first started reading this blog. I do stuff like that. I'd point out that I'm a bit twee, but you knew that already.

And since a comment up above triggered the thought, I know present...

Our Church (Graham Nash Our House (For everybody who thinks Christianity jumped the shark with the Nicean Creed.)

Our church
Is a very very fine church
With three Gods on the wall
Sometimes they act so small
Damning different thinking in the pew.

(And that's as far as I've gotten. Consider this an open religion filk and add more lyrics.)
