It took a while to convince the Trophy Wife to let me take pictures of her feet and post them on the internet. Wait, that's not as kinky as it sounds! She's been loafing about in these nice socks she was sent by our very own Patricia, OM, using yarn colors based on the Spanish Shawl nudibranch, and I just think they need to be acknowledged — but maybe you haven't noticed, but she likes to avoid the whole interwubbley fanfare. Finally, though, I caught her with her toasty warm tootsies atop an ottoman and snapped this shot, so there you are: beautiful socks and a rare image of the Trophy Wife.

Thanks, Patricia!

I always notice on Consumerist that it is the most innocent of posts that get hardcore trolled. So socks would have to be the most innocent of posts. I now await the tromping of troll feet.

I can't even imagine how one would go about knitting such a stripy pattern. Nice work, Patricia!

Those are very nice socks. Look comfy, too. Way to go, Patricia.
XD @ #5
Speaking as a yarncrafter, normally one buys (or dyes) multi-color yarn and just works the socks as normal. I'd have to say that's what's done here, given the way the socks look. Try googling 'self-striping yarn'. Very nice looking and not any more difficult than using a solid yarn. (Can be easier -- my mother taught me to crochet on multi-color yarn so that the stitch I was working into would look different than the yarn I was using to make the next row.)

@5 - Easy enough, you use special sock yarn that is self-patterning, i.e. the yarn is striped and the pattern emerges. :)

Woo-HOOO!!!! THANK YOU, PZ. When Pat asked me (she saw my earlier postings here, so she knew I'd do it) to design a colorway based on the Nudibranch I was happy for the challenge. Here is a picture of another pair of socks from the same colorway combination, which I worked up myself:
http://www.knitivity.com/knitterman/?p=1599
Everyone's knitting is different so there's no end to how the colorway will work up. And the "Spanish Shawl" colorway has now been added to the regular colorway line-up for both sock yarn and laceweight yarns.
Thanks again, PZ for posting the pics!

@ Aquaria #19 -
I'm in Houston, fercryin'outloud, and I am actually wearing my Spanish Shawl socks today. They are SO comfortable in warm weather -- wool can absorb TONS of moisture and still feel dry, so they are much better than cotton socks in the summer. Very lovely, even on a man's foot!

Knitted socks... So popular that the Sock Summit (where my wife will be teaching a class) sold out within half an hour of opening registration.
Posted by: Somnolent Aphid | June 27, 2009 12:26 PM
Warm feet is (are?) just one of the secrets to a happy marriage. I wonder if Jodi or Jason knit? Here at the aphid house knitting is part of the fabric of life. I tried it myself a few years ago, thinking it would give us one more thing in common but among the general complaints was that I was turning it into an engineering project, which a) was true and b) meant that i spent more time trying to figure out how to create patterns than actually knit any "thing". So now i let the other aphids sit and knit while I merely think about patterns and without trying to instantiate them.

I'm wondering now if it's knitted from multicolour wool or bits of it joined or just dyed after, curious either way

Nice! Of course we all love sox and violins here.
I'm gratified to see Amy Stewart's Wicked Plants on the Seed's book picks list in the margin. Not a technical manual by any means (though she seems to have been passing out tips pretty freely in her book tour) but nice sumer reading. I've been following this foot for a long time, never commented. Pretty much subscribe to the feet thoughts...however, reading most of these feet, it disfootens me how nasty and smelly most feet are here after the death of Dr. Scholl. I don't believe in the aftersock and try to build my foot compass on my own feet and the golden shoes. Quite appalling including the main shoe from the post...leave a strange foot. So much for kindness and good feet. Why don't people keep some feet to themselves when they have nothing good to smell? I thought the writer and the other feet in this shoe were somewhat above this podiatry.

So, so pretty! Well done, Patricia!
I love Ray's sock yarns. I just wish I could afford to buy more often. In fact, I bought a skein of "Spanish Shawl" myself for some socks (that was a month or two ago). Still plugging away at them - spinning gets in the way of just about everything else now...
I use wool socks for camping. Really. Any time of the year, they rock when you're up in the mountains.

Hey, Ray, nice to see you over here! And nice to see the Sock Summit mentioned. The organisers tried to tell their ISP that there might be some pretty high demand on the opening of registration, and as usual the tide of knitters was underestimated. They broke the servers.
Anyone who wants their own socks, ask around: there's probably someone right nearby who can show you how, especially among us science nerds. And if, like me, you thought you were allergic to wool, wait until you try a high-quality product like Ray's Knitivity yarns. You won't believe it's sheep!

Wool socks in summer were a fantastic discovery ten years ago when I discovered SmartWool socks when I worked a rafting river as part of one of the river outfitter's staff. These days I knit my own socks of machine-washable merino wool/nylon blends, and wear them year round with sandals. For those of you who can't wear wools (and some folks are truly allergic), there are some nice bamboo/nylon blends that will wick moisture away from your skin, though not to the degree that wool will. For cooler weather, there are some very nice sock blends with camalid fibers like llama and alpaca, and a very interesting blend in yak/nylon. Cotton tends to trap moisture which is why you get miserable, stinky wet feet when you wear cotton socks in summer. And almost all the natural fiber blends can be found in undyed versions for folks who are dye sensitive, and can give you an alternative to the white cotton sock. There are also sock yarns without the nylon for those who don't like it, but the nylon helps with durability of the sock.

Hmmm.
It appears to me that the socks were put on in haste and with no thought of wearing them for long or with a shoe. Clue: The twisted toe section of the right sock (which appears on the left side of the self-taken photo).
The sock on the right foot needs a half turn to fit properly (see left foot for comparison).
IMHO, a woman would not wear a twisted sock.
Between that overlooked detail and the camera angle I'm wondering if TW turned down your offer and you decided to be your own model. Regardless, the socks are beauts!
